it's not a mistranslation, it was the "critical decision/ selection" he had to make according to the prophecy, which was fleeing without discovering Pain's secret or die and discovering it in the process so that he could be defeated in the future. Pain and Naruto are both the children of prophecy and both represent the different outcomes of the prophecy, that's why Jiraiya's decision was so determinant.

To make things clear about why Jiraiya sacrificed himself instead of escaping, at the point when he defeated the scar headed body he got a clue but was not sure yet. The Sage toad suggsted to escape at that point but Jiraiya wanted to confirm with all the Pain bodies and when he emerged he got clapped and couldn't escape anymore. Basically, if Jiraiya had escaped when Sage toad suggested, he would have had a small theory but no confirmation

If he did escape at the point when he could have, he couldn't have gotten the info he was able to. Deffo was a translation error imo.

Yeah Zero absolutely simplified it. He didn't like Sasuske going with Oro who will corrupt Sasuske into something he isn't. If Sasuske would of stayed, they eventually would cross paths with Akatsuki. Naruto wouldn't care if he killed Itachi, just like he didn't care Shikamaru killed Hidan. Naruto isn't against killing/avenging, tho he does try to avoid killing. He just didn't want his friend becoming a villain.

The only Akatsuki who know Tobi is Madara are Pain, Konan and Zetsu. So that's one of the main reasons why Tobi was playing silly and hiding his identity. You will of course later on fully understand his motives, but from what you have seen so far, the world believes the big bad Madara is dead and he definitely wants to keep it that way to avoid every one hunting him and interrupting his progress.
