Actually..... this series didn't straight up turn dark from a bright cheerful anime. There have already been plenty of deaths, just except not as disturbing. The spiders massacring, and the bomber killing a whole group, etc

With the queen, at least for colt, it's more about just having extreme loyalty like regular ants following the queen. The others seem to have a lot more personality, and are seeming to not have near as much loyalty, but have some more self interest choices.

if you think about it, actual ants are pretty strong (they can lift 50 times their body weight), so it makes sense that these chimera ants are gonna be pretty difficult to beat

What inspired the author? The world, lol. Yu Yu Hakusho and Level E, 2 series before HxH, were all dark too. Also HxH is not a feel good story anyway, not only this arc. It's just the anime makes it look like that with the color and music. But if you read the manga, you can feel the darkness from the beginning.

Just from the fact that the ants can learn, makes them a problem. They're strong as hell too. Imagine mixing human strength with animal strength. And then Nen being an additional factor. That's a new type of threat and fear for hunters.

i believe the ants dont turn in incomplete bodies/leftovers to the base for the queen, since that would be disrespectful to her and we know the ants are hierarchical creatures... plus there's already internal conflict over whether the soldiers are allowed to eat the humans or not

I remember I recommended this anime to one of my friends and he was like “I don’t know why you said it damaged you emotionally. It is literally about 2 kids fighting and getting stronger. The music is uplifting, the colors are super vibrant, there is no blood in the scenes.” And then he got to this arc and was like “ok, I get it now” lol
