Yo Patrons, check updated chapters 1 - 9

The more I did Joe's Journal, the more I thought about all the small details that many of the readers would probably find interesting.

So I went back to the beginning and added another narrative voice. Hope you like it. Updated some artwork and added another panel or two as well.

Will probably keep doing this until I really see my vision. Because I still have a lot left in me.

Thanks for your support everyone.

Hey Liz, sorry for taking a lifetime to answer. It is definitely scary to think about ending up in a place like Elan, simply for being a teenager. Elan was really fucked up because I saw some kids in there who weren't even on the level you described. Kids who had simply talked back to their parents once, or maybe started using swear words. That was really crazy to see. Smoking pot, sneaking out at night, disrespecting your folks, these were fairly common (and even they didn't deserve a place like Elan) but to see those truly innocent kids (who didn't even get the chance to rebel a little) end up in Elan, that was heartbreaking. 1) I think a couple people did convince their parents, but how they did it, I never knew. Everything was so, whats the word... compartmentalized, that it was really hard to get a grip on any other "story" then their your own. I mean, we obviously knew everything about each other because Elan used that information against us publicly, but as far as knowing what another person was plotting (like slowly and very secretly convincing their parents it was a bad place), we didn't know anything. But every once in a blue moon, someone would just get suddenly "pulled out" (sent home) and one can only assume the parents found out somehow. 2) As depressing as it sounds, the amount of teens (yes, even angsty, confrontational, fuck everything, teens) who eventually conformed was very high. Like 98%. Elan was just that good at breaking people. I think the sleep and food deprivation played into it a lot. But for sure, you would have those couple kids out of 100 who simply never gave in and rebelled as hard as possible from day one. Those kids were almost put through an entirely different Elan. It was NOT easy for them. 3) Yes, a good amount of people stayed past 18, which really shows the power of the Elan brainwashing. But to be fair, Elan basically pinpointed your age and the amount of time before 18 as soon as you first walked in the door. And if they knew you had a chance of signing out, sooner than others, then they seemed to turn up that heat a bit. To put it in percentages like the last question, I would say that out of 25 kids who turned 18, maybe 17 of them stayed. But that is a pretty high percentage considering they were literally choosing to stay in a living hell. Some kids came in so young that there was basically no chance of them even being able to consider signing out. It was really sad to see those kids. Because they were obviously young to begin with, 14, 15, even 13. Like I said before, it was almost like those kids were put through a very different Elan, an Elan where they were kind of "written off" by the staff members. Staff who knew that they could just torture those kids without giving any kind of counter-balance. Because if you, for example, ended up in Elan at 17 years old, then the staff would still torture you, but they would also whisper sweet-nothings in your ear to make you feel like maybe they were really trying to save you. I don't know, it was a really creepy place like that. And you had to be pretty observant to notice these subtle differences in how people were treated. Because like I said in my first answer, everyone in Elan was kind of on a "personalized" track based on so many different factors, that even though we all went through one regimented, shared, fucked up, structured existence; at the same time, we all kind of were on our own and living in our own unique hell crafted especially for us.

Hey Joe, love the new updates. You're doing a great job with this. I think this is all so intriguing to me for a couple reasons. Number one, I'm interested in morbid things, especially involving human behavior. Cults, serial killers, psychological conditions. That sort of stuff. Number two, I very easily could have ended up in Elan or a similar program. When I was teenager in high school, I had minor behavior problems. Smoking pot, cigarettes, average grades, lying to my parents. My mom later told me an "expert" tried to convince her to send me to a place like this but fortunately someone else warned her that these programs weren't what they seemed. I thank my lucky stars that she asked someone in the know because this is one of my worst fears. A place that you can't just go into autopilot and tune everything out? I would rather go to prison, maybe even commit suicide. Anyways, I have a couple questions if you don't mind. Let me know if I should post them elsewhere. 1. Did you ever see or hear of anyone who was ever able to convince their parents to pick them up and take them home? I know Elan did a good job of preventing that from happening but I can't help like feeling that some parents had to be able to figure out somehow that their kids were in trouble. I want to believe that, at least. 2. Did you ever see or hear of anyone who was able to not allow themselves to conform to the program? Once again, I know that Elan does everything in their power to get kids to get with the program but teenagers can be pretty strong willed. 3. I noticed on the resident sheet you showed, that some people were 18 or over. What was keeping them at Elan at that point? Were they just so brainwashed that they wanted to stay? Were there kids who left on their 18th birthdays? Once again, I think you are doing a great job and can't wait to see how this project evolves. Thank you for sharing your story and thoughts with us.
