Kind of dovetails nicely with the 80's idea of the small suburban town setting as white utopia (that inevitably gets shattered by aliens, monsters or some other Other).

One thing I've always thought about is how many 90s movies have this kind of wealthy suburban setting - Father of the Bride is another example. I think back then people could kind of appreciate it as aspirational but to do it in a movie now it would almost be seen as bad taste, an excessive and not equitable lifestyle. Even more so for younger generations who know that they will never achieve that kind of wealth if they haven't been born into it.
