I think the movies depiction of christians as a minority religion either stems from the fact that they are persecuted in some countries (though definitely not the United States). Either that, or the aforementioned depiction of hick/hillbilly Christians as shown on True Detective etc. etc. These movies are just backlash, in a some sense. And although you can't equate agnosticism with anti-christianity, people like Dawkins, Hitchens and their ilk have tried to make it seem so. In fact I'm pretty sure that Kevin Sorbos character is supposed to represent one of these men.
