Bounty updates (March 2017)

These are the current bounties we have created for March - about $15 remains to be spent from this month.

Here is an overview of all the bounties we have spent money on so far -

https://www.bountysource.com/teams/libretro/bounties

As you can see, there is an equal spread between core-related bounties as you can see and RetroArch bounties.

Starting as of April, we will add another $150 to the bounty bucket.

REMINDER: Patreon makes all this possible! Your contributions are not only welcome but absolutely necessary if you want us to continue funding development like this. And as our monthly Patreon income goes up, so will our ability to put more into the monthly bounty bucket as well! We think funding open source development like this will be in everybody's best interests, and just like science requires funding, so too does coding.

Your feedback is welcome and will be taken into consideration!

NOTE: You yourself as an individual contributor can add money on Bountysource as well.

Comments

I strongly support the idea of increasing the prize on listed bounty projects rather than adding new projects to the list every month. It makes a lot of economic sense; complex projects stand to receive larger rewards, pending projects become more attractive, and bounty amounts will become more informative over time on what amounts are required to motivate developers.

I don't have any special contact with him but he's very good at replying to YouTube comments on his videos. I can hit him up there and see what he says. I believe he's a patreon so maybe there won't be a need as he'll read this :) ETA Prime is another one. He's now connected with Launchbox so if retroarch can hang on to those coattails it could get you much better exposure. PS i never even knew you had your own YouTube channel which is exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about.

Thanks for your feedback. Yeah, I do feel like the current guys who post news for us on Reddit could really step it up a notch in terms of self-promotion. The problem is that we would feel it a bit beneath us to toot our own horn, but I think honestly this is a foolish attitude to have since so many of our peers in this emulation scene seem to have no qualms about doing the same, and ultimately it is about being effective. We are definitely in this for the long haul. I will take your advice into consideration as to how to approach the bounties and it will factor into how I am going to spend the $150 for April. If you have any contacts with Simply Austin, try to give us a good word, it would be great to have some Youtubers give us some more exposure on say the bounty system or any of the other subprojects we have. We have our own Youtube channel but honestly, we lack people with any charisma or people who even feel self-confident enough to talk inside a microphone, so that is never going to work out well. So maybe aligning with some Youtubers who actually have significant followings could work out better.

At first I thought how you guys were handling this bounty system was pointless due to the low intial funds put in but I've come round to the idea. Breaking potential development up into smaller chunks will hopefully help attract developers regardless of funding. At the same time I feel you shouldn't stretch the funds too thin and use the monthly contributions to only increase the payout on each one thats currently up. It may take many months for these issues to get closed but it's about the long haul no? Any developers that come in may hang around. You need to sell yourselves more as well. Shout from rooftops when you make improvements like the past weeks. Remind people of your patreon and what funding it will mean. Show what's already been achieved since it started. Contact Youtuber simply Austin, he's a big fan, maybe ask him to show netplay and talk about retroarch a bit. Post on the (shitshow) Emulation subreddit. Make sure everyone knows it's libretro behind retropie and things like that. I'm sure I'm more the rule than the oddity, I want to support as many projects as possible on patreon. This means my available funding is stretched very thin. You need to encourage people to just donate $1 if it otherwise means they wouldn't give anything. I likely won't be adding anything to the bountys, and it looks like I'm not alone in that so it'll needed to be mostly funded by the patreon. I look forward to see where this project goes over the next year. Good luck and Thank you.
