The definition of ‘luxury’ is a state of great comfort, abundance, and extravagance. Luxury comes in many forms, so you have some options if you want to plan a luxury date. My tips below will help you design your luxury date, whether you want to drop some serious cash or you’d prefer to find a budget-oriented way to experience more of life’s little luxuries.

The Perfect Night Out

Planning the perfect night out means you’ll have to know a little about your partner. For some, a luxurious date night out would entail shopping, cocktails, and hors d’oeuvres, perhaps followed by a Broadway play or an evening at the opera. But for someone else, the height of luxury might mean great tickets to a sporting event and then grabbing the best burger in the state. Knowing how your date experiences luxury will help you plan something you will both get the most out of, plus it means you won’t waste money on something they don’t fully appreciate.

If you don’t know them very well yet, the best idea is to mimic your regular date night but elevate it with thoughtful touches. So, if your typical Friday-night date means you meet for happy hour after work and then grab takeout on the way home, do something similar. However, add to the mystique and anticipation by letting your partner know you’re planning something special, asking them to dress up (if the occasion calls for it), and then changing the setting of the date. Make reservations at that hip new restaurant that’s hard to get into—this will show the effort you put into planning your evening.

Then, don’t let the evening end with dinner; have an activity planned. You could see live music, dance the night away at a high-end nightclub, or attend an art gallery opening. If none of those are easily accessible where you live, you can always drive to the best view in town and bring an excellent bottle of champagne.

Affordable, At-Home Luxury

Many of us learned how to create indulgence date nights at home during the pandemic—those are excellent skills to keep! Part of luxury is picking out precisely the right thing at the right time. Luckily, this means that you can add some extravagance—even if your luxury date is at home.

What makes something feel extravagant is going above and beyond what you usually do. If your busy schedules mean you make a quick dinner, watch an episode of your favorite show, and then quickly fall asleep—pick a night to switch it up. Turn off the TV, and have a temporary rule that your devices stay out of sight. Get dressed up, even though you’re staying home! Trust me, the evening will feel swankier if you both look your best. Then, make a special dinner together, like a treasured recipe that you only pull out for special occasions. Turn the overhead lights down low or light candles, and use the good dishes if you have them! Afterward, do something extra sexy together. Give each other back massages with a massage oil that smells delectable. Or take a bubble bath together or go for a moonlit walk. The most important thing is that your activities allow you to keep all your focus on each other.

Luxury can also come in the amount of time you spend together. If your date nights typically consist of rushed happy hours after a busy day at work and before you collect the kids (or dogs) from daycare, invest in some extra time together. Ask if your parents or a trusted friend will take the kids overnight so you can stay out late and let the conversation flow. Then, linger in bed together the next morning. But whatever you do, don’t gravitate toward your phone. Your emails and Instagram scrolling can wait until your date is over. Snuggle, read the paper together, play Wordle—whatever keeps you connected until the very last second.
