IRL, even when the Vietnam conflict revealed itself to be really messed up even by USA standards in the late 60's, there were still a lot of people in some close-knit communities that believed sending youth to fight in war was a virtue to be upheld.

He's a great example of trying to separate the art from the artist. To me, his best film is "The Pianist". Adrien Brody rightfully earned his first Academy Award for Best Actor as it was one of the best acting performances I've ever seen. But holy hell.....why did Polianski have to direct that masterpiece?! I hate that shitbag randomly releases films reminding people he's a great director.

The studio who produced "The Deer Hunter" initially didn't want to cast John in the role because he was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer the same year filming took place. However, his girlfriend at the time Meryl Streep (who played Linda in the film) and director Michael Cimino threatened to walk out on the project if Cazale wasn't included in the film. He also had backing from industry heavyweights at the time including Al Pacino who would accompany him when he was going through cancer treatments and fellow co-star Robert De Niro paid for Cazale's health insurance while he was going through treatment. John was essentially on his deathbed when filming started for "The Deer Hunter" and all of Cazale's scenes were filmed first. A month or so after his scenes were filmed, he passed on; having never seen the film he worked on win Best Picture. John Cazale was only in five films but every film he was cast in was nominated for Best Picture and all of them benefited greatly from his acting ability. Even on his deathbed, the man brought his acting A game.

MOW !!! MOW!!! and playfully smack us on our heads ... understandably he was a bit on edge sometimes especially when he drank.. i miss that man he treated me like family and was a good man never judged me treated me fairly ..was crazy when i got cancer he would give me little bit of a hard time but i know it was his way of telling me everything was gonna be ok ,then years later he got cancer and he apologised for how he was towards me but he had nothing to apologise for R.I.P. to a good man
