"that's great it helped you come out, id like to think you would've reached the same conclusion eventually without an out of character sunny episode."
I wanted to respond to this comment directly.
I may have come to that conclusion without the need of the episode eventually. But the fact is I didnt. I saw this and it helped me. And other people in similar situations need to see it or something else too.
This needs to exist so others like me can figure their shit out. We need more things representing this to help guide those lost souls who dont understand who they are.

yep benjamin and to be specific about "woke" it's more that they chose a side in the culture war rather than lampoon both sides of it. some people say "oh they were always making fun of conservatives you just didnt get it" but that's a cop out ("do you want a democrat who's blasting your ass or a republican") they used to be more even handed.
rob has stated he listens to NPR to get ideas for the show. whatever polite liberals are supposed to believe he bases the gang on the opposite of that. the problem is both NPR and fox news are two sides of the same coin, corporate controlled and will only give you limiting narratives, both liberal and conservative media exist to create tribal identities and inflame division. that's why when covid came up they were very timid and milk toast how they approached it.
and reinmaker - that's great it helped you come out, id like to think you would've reached the same conclusion eventually without an out of character sunny episode. for some reason mac's "i dont know where i fit in as a gay man" came across as such a dumb line, but maybe i take it for granted that i've already known for a long time being gay doesn't mean you have to fit into any stereotypes , you just like dudes, gay culture is a bunch of crap mostly, we really have nothing in common with each other except same sex attraction. so just be yourself. if this episode helped with that than cool. but then they kinda turned mac into a stereotype after this

Any chance we'll ever get ATLANTA? I mean it won Katt Williams an Emmy award. It's hilarious, even when it seems it shouldn't be. And shows ATL ppl in different and more relatable ways than the average ATL based movie or show that usually only focuses on hood shyt.

I'm not a fan of the episode either. They go way woke in the later seasons like I am in line with allyship and their take but it feels less like jokes and more like this is or personal opinion let's try to spin it in a funny way if that makes sense. And then his dad not accepting him is stupid because he literally banged another dude and Charlie's mom at the same time lol.

There's some behind the scenes context you should know about before going in to the season 14 finale. Otherwise the episode makes no sense. I can DM you what you need to know without spoiling anything if you're interested

I am going to have to disagree. Primarily because this is the episode that helped me come out. I am gay. But for years struggled with it and didn't know where I would fit or really what I am.
I'm not going to dogpile on you about it but I will explain myself.
This episode and how it was presented had a profound impact on me as it showed that its not simply Black and White. Its not a simple matter. Its a personal evolution. Its different for every single person out there who struggles with their identity. And the fact that this character was able to find a way to express who they are that was outside of the cultural stereotypical norms showed me that I am not a stereotype. I dont have to fit a certain image. I know who I am and who I am in love with.
Mac did spend a significant amount of time before Season 9. The "Tranny" as it were is the main finger point. This was a bubble that grew and grew until it burst. My only complaint is I feel like its funnier and in character if Mac only used his Homosexuality in a way that benefited him because then its on point with the sleezy actions of the group. He came out on the boat trip but then went back in. He came out to get the money, I think it would have been funnier and more in character if he had gone back in and played up his selfishness. But I do understand the freedom one has when they are free to express who and what they are on the inside.

thanks for the thoughtful reply, i tend to get piled on when i post these sometimes. the dance itself was impressive for sure, i still think its more self serving then what was best for the show, or maybe he was trying for an emmy. frank's nose was a gag they've already done, though the extent they took it with his bloated face was pretty good. really cricket was the only thing i chuckled at. the whole set up of them investing all the money in a float, to rope in rich gays that would never go to this shitty dive bar, caring about what the media writes about them, charlie saying "its 2018 and you're the only one who doesn't understand gay culture", mac not knowing where he fits as a gay man LOL some of the writing felt too on the nose and kinda cringey. definitely out of character
thanks also for that in depth explanation of what rob would have needed to do for that physique. perhaps he went about it the smartest way one can in terms of his health, but as far as the show goes it wasn't needed IMO what comedic mileage we got was minimal, like he gets a lot of props for his dedication gaining so much weight than going the opposite way, but the latter seems more ego based, contradicting what he said in the past about doing fat mac. as shows go on everyone gets more attractive and he wanted to do the opposite. of course a few years in hollywood will change your mind lol caitlyn too, leo noticed, has definitely had work done. to me it actually makes them a bit less funny, or their characters less believable, running this shitty bar but now they look like supermodels
and yea i know exactly what you mean about the roller rink, they've been very good about continuity except for that and a few minor things here and there. i still enjoy that episode as a standalone more because it was pretty funny.

I think your opinion is great. I'm straight btw. So, first of all - I love the episode - mostly because I do for some reason find the physical comedy bit with Danny Devito funny, and Danny's misguided view of putting people in a box, and trying to expose Mac to what he thinks 'gay people are', or 'like'.
I mainly love the episode, because I love the dance. I will say this though, I agree that at some point they didn't know what to do with Mac's character. Also, at some point after he came out, the joke seemed to start to become more 'Mac's gay, isn't that funny, he's so gay', which was never what Sunny's satire was about. It was about laughing at how terrible these people. It wasn't about the terrible things that they did being what was funny. Like, making "funny lips" in blackface isn't funny. It's funny hearing. Frank think and say that, that is what the focus is during a debate between whether or not black face can be done tastefully by a white person.
I also agree, there were always hints as far back as him and Carmen "the tranny", but he still absolutely pursued women and slept with them, and not just to make other people know about it. Later, he pretended to sleep with "Dusty" and played sounds of a woman being pleasured, so that people would THINK he was sleeping with a woman.
Finally, the dance just wasn't Always Sunny. It wasn't Mac's character, and it was a different tone. But, it was such a beautiful performance IMO, that I give it a pass, and love it. But I 100% think it didn't belong in Sunny at the same time, you know? But I'm glad it's there. Like the roller rink episode (I won't say more so I don't spoil a future ep), I just kinda consider it a stand-alone episode that isn't cannon in my head. Even though Frank 'getting it', does get brought up once more, later. I will say, in the art episode, Frank has that intense connection to that painting, and 'gets that', so we do see that Frank seems to have a side that can appreciate and understand interpretative art, so I think there is at least some basis for Frank getting it.
Lastly, yeah, Rob did use juice. His body in that episode is attainable naturally (by some people), but not even REMOTELY CLOSE to in the time-line that he achieved it. In fact, on one of the podcast episodes, they referred to bloodwork, and mentioned Rob's free testosterone result. And teased him about how it was "red" - meaning above the reference range. Meaning, above the amount that can be produced naturally by the body. That doesn't take away from his very hard work and dedication and great diet, etc. that he would've needed, but yeah. And I don't think he probably went too hard with the drugs. But he absolutely had to have juiced, and I am 99% sure he has been on replacement dose TRT since then.
Rob has had physical insecurity I think since childhood. And they brought that into his character. Anyway, my guess is something like 600 mg/week of testosterone (enanthate or cypionate ester). It is by no means a light dose, but by bodybuilding standards or something, it is mild. He might have used a lower test dose, and a few hundred mg of primobolan as well, or maybe 20mg/day of oral anavar or something. But by the standards of the training and drugs side, and his commitment to it, I think just test. Those other drugs I mentioned give an even more chistled, low body fat, grainular, vascular, hard look. And I definitely do not think he used a diuretic to get rid of water. He is clearly not bloated or something, but the bodybuilding world is insane and ultra unhealthy, and folks will deplete basically all of the water in their body for a show.
I would literally bet my life that Mac used supra-physiological doses of exogenous drugs to help achieve his physique. But I give him all the credit in the world for it, too. I think he did it as smart and conservative as you can, and he could've pushed it way further on the drug side. As crazy jacked as he was, he could've gotten much bigger, and much lower bodyfat/appear lower body fat from water loss, etc. but he didn't. My guess is that after that season, where Mac is clearly (other than this season) in the best looking shape of his life, he has remained on TRT since, keeping himself in a naturally possible test range, but one that is constant as opposed to ours, which pulses up and down more, and he is probably keeping his near the top of the genetically possible natural reference range, but still naturally possible. He did gain some benefits from juicing above that, that he will forever have (such as some new androgen receptors that would've have other wise existed, etc.) but yeah. While I don't advise it, I think he did it smart. He worked his ass off, he ate amazing, he was disciplined, he probably spent half a year or something blasting a little over half a gram of gear, and then switched after to a replacement dose. The results were effective enough, and he probably has very little health consequence as a result, and he is much more safely maintaining a not as impressive physique, but still an impressive physique now.

unpopular opinion but 13x10 is my least favorite episode. it just isn't sunny.
and yes i'm gay and i hate gay mac lol i feel like they just don't know where to go with his character after this. as satire it worked much better having him be in denial, that was always a big part of his personality.
they kinda retconned the character around season 9, he went after girls in the past he just seemed to have some latent homoerotic tendencies he denied. which is just funnier and more in line with his character.
i know he's got 2 moms and that's cool but this episode felt more ego based. he wanted to shoehorn in his ridiculous body he achieved with his hollywood trainer (maybe some juice?), showoff what an ally he is, it just comes across as self-serving.
yes the dance was impressive i get why its touching but it just doesn't belong in the show. danny devito "i get it" is sooo corny it hurts to watch.

the season 13 finale is definitely a weird one for sunny, its an emotional culmination to a long running arc instead of a typical comedic climax. Rob (Mac) was really pushing for the show to win an emmy around this time and decided to go all out for an emotional ending to a season. its one of the rare moments where any of the gang show a little humility. Mac as a character finding it so hard to be who he wants to in the light of his father and people outside the bar. Certainly an episode that caught me off guard at first viewing but one ive come to really enjoy! wouldnt mind you rewatching it with some added context
