Forgotten Weapons Q&A questions

Greetings. I have the opportunity to return the favor, and put questions to Ian this time around. He had asked his patrons for questions to throw at me, so I’m matching. It’s a short turnaround, so you have two or three days to come up with something if you want. Note, I'm not guaranteeing it'll be posed/answered, so make it a good one! Extending down to S6 level tiers.

I would nominate the Charlton Conversion, which turned a bolt action Lee-Enfield into a light machine gun! Supposed to have worked surprisingly well. Bonus points. like the Bob Semple, it comes from WW2 New Zealand. But don't take my word for it, see what Ian had to say. https://www.forgottenweapons.com/light-machine-guns/charlton-automatic-rifle/

ROBERT NABORNEY

What has been your favorite tank that the chieftain has reviewed so far?

Josh Conti

The Liberator pistol?

Thunderchild

I'd say the overall quality of the sights, easy to pick up, accurate, useful in multiple levels of light.

Thunderchild

What would the firearm equivalent of the Bob Semple Tank be?

USAUSA

Having used Danish MG42 (M/62) for years, we were taught 80-90% of the problems while shooting would be with the bolt. As a consequence, we carried a spare bolt for quick change. Were there other MGs in history that also required the gunner to carry a spare bolt to offset reliability problems? DId the WW2 german manuals mention this?

Mikkel Skipper

Is there a benefit to increasing projectile/bullet length over increasing caliber size?

Shaun Davis

What makes some guns stop functioning in cold temperatures and how do gun designers combat this?

Jaxon Fox

Ian: can you give a description of the evolution of infantry anti-armor weapons from the "powerful rifle" to the various means of launching shaped charges culminating in RPGs and guided missiles, and reflect on how the various developments fit in with the doctrine that was current at each stage?

Matisse Enzer

I'd like to know if Ian can think of any weapons where the development of the vehicle version influenced the development of a man portable weapon or equivalent.

Leon Peters-Malone

How different is the development between small arms and armored vehicles ? Is there any test of materials and/or factories before prototyping ? like production capacity and/or where basic materials come from. Thanks !

Aelis

Did Ian scratch the tank driving itch in Finland or does he want newer, larger tanks to drive?

Matt Schwoebel

Greetings Ian. Differences in access to the most modern equipment between opposing groups, be it due to a lack of resources to make or acquire such in a meaningful quantity or a lack of knowledge to make your own, have existed since man first started making sticks pointy. Is there any conflict that stands out to you in history where technological parity between the sides would have significantly changed the outcome?

Q: track tensioning is a running theme on chieftans videos, showing how practical the tank is in practice for crews to service to avoid failure - and how crew ergonomics was considered. Is there an analog you would consider for firearms that is often overlooked but critical for a firearm to be considered successful?

Hello Ian. I happen to really like the concept of an offensive handgun: a pistol that is purpose made to be a primary weapon. The most obvious and prominent example is of course HK Mk.23, but if one thinks about it, the concept is not new: in a sense, weapons like Stechkin APS/APB or broomhandle Mauser (sic!) de-facto filled the same role. What are the other, maybe lesser known examples of the same concept that you are aware of? What is your personal opinion on the idea? Would you carry one? Thank you.

Are there examples of secondary weapons like machine guns being specifically designed for vehicle use rather than vehicles adapting an infantry weapon to suit the needs of the vehicle mount, and I am limiting this to land based vehicles not aircraft or boats/ships.

Robert Henry Illston

Can Elbonia be saved?

Thunderchild

What does Ian think of how crazy everything got regarding the museum vs private collection debate, considering everyone who weighed in?

Thunderchild

Since revolving magazines are a thing on small arms and tanks, when does a magazine of this kind makes more sense (is more effective/best situational use), than any other kind of loading mechanism?

Reichsbierminister

Considering the Germans continued the use of the MG34 in armored vehicle mounting roles over the MG42 due to concerns about changing the barrel, why did no other nation do the same? The US Browning M1919 cannot have its barrel swapped out that easily when mounted in the mantlet or the hull mount of a US vehicle, and the same applies for the DP/SG series of machine guns in Soviet service at the time. Was American/Soviet doctrine therefore to fire in short bursts and simply avoid long streams of fire that would overheat the barrel, or was there a 'tanker modification' of some sorts to make barrel changing more efficient?

Kazuki K.

I blame Ed Nash for the above 😉 https://youtu.be/gXMX7rxMKdE

What does Ian make of the insanity that continues with ammo availability?

Striker1959

Question to both: Can you please discuss the use of anti tank weaponry in an anti shipping role, from an Irish perspective? (Something something HMS Brave Borderer something...)

Minion

Does the FAL deserve its rather mythical reputation as "The Right Arm of the free world" ?? Was it as great as is touted by a variety of sources or was it just an average rifle that happened to find its way into wide spread use ?

Admiral Tiberius

Could Gun Jesus please do a video on the holy hand grenade of Antioch? Perhaps as an April fool's thing.

Sebastian Craenen

Simple to ask hard to answer; What is the holy grail, the gun you want to get your hands on but have not been able/probably won't be able to? Yes, you must pick only one.

Sim Crawford

For Ian, are there any good examples where tank (or naval) cannon technology influenced small arms? For example, any single shot rifles that automatically eject their casings like how a tank does? And for The Chieftain, the opposite. Any instances in tank ordinance development where some small arm technology influences it. For example, some maniac working on a autoloader decides a tilting barrel a la the m1911 might do the trick?

Commissar Carl

Oh man... Too many to pick from. I'll limit myself to two. What WWII era anti-tank rifle would you consider to have been the most effective purely in its intended role as an anti-tank weapon? What tank machine guns (coaxial, bow guns, etc.) would you consider to be/were good in their role in armored vehicles, but poor in their role as infantry weapons? Are there any for which the reverse is the case?

Felicity Longis

What are the improvements of the japanese Type 97 Tank machinegun over the original czeck design and how well was it liked by the japanese troops? Love your collaboration, keep up the good work.

Alexander H.

Question for both to answer and then compare selection/rationale: you are a TC in Vietnam in an M551 Sheridan. Which small arms do you requisition/"borrow"/beg/steal/plunder for yourself and your crew?

Adam Schindler

What is your favorite firearm considered for military service that never got adopted?
