In Australia we have a principle applied to recovery/repair vehicles that they should have commensurate mobility, communications and protection. It wouldn’t be a huge leap to state that this principle was developed from experience. I know the Desert war (40 – 43) played a large part in developing Commonwealth doctrine as this was in reaction to the Afrika Korps ability to not only repair/recover their own tanks but also a large number of British tanks that were pressed into service against the original owners. Is this a common principle and how did different nations develop their first line repair/recovery capabilities? I only ask this as this maybe a field worth exploring as it would have a direct impact on the combat effectiveness of an armored vehicle as a system of systems.

Hopefully my question isn't too large but here goes, Basically I want to ask about how much could Pershing really have contributed if it somehow were available in large numbers for DDay? What pros and cons would it bring? Would it be the savior the anti Sherman crowd claims it would of been? (If it could of been available somehow) As a sort of follow up/related question, do you think the opposition/minimal support for a 90mm armed tank was justified? With hindsight (Such as know how common Panther was, etc), would it theoretically have been better to pursue a 90mm armed tank instead of a 76mm one? I feel like Bruce & TD branch have decent reasoning as a 90mm vehicle could easily have resulted in a slow & heavy vehicle from their perspective but with hindsight the M36 proved it's worth but the opposition to a 90mm armed tank seems to be a bit less convincing. How much of an impact could the 90mm armed M4 have been if it somehow could have been available in numbers by DDay? Aside from the armor penetration capabilities of the 90mm I'd imagine the fact it also had a good HE round to make it a more complete upgrade from the 75mm over the 76mm I'd imagine. Sorry if this is too long, these questions are all kind of tied together for me.
