Cut me some slack, I’ve been waiting for an Amelia question during trivia night for like ten years. I don’t get to flex on this unless my friend’s kid is doing a book report on a historical figure lol and then we bring in the autographed flag she carried with her when she flew over the pacific and her autographed books and drop the mic on those 4th graders

I wrote and designed a museum exhibit about Amelia Earhart. He was a private collector. Anyways, based on years of writing this shit up I believe she ran out of gas and was eaten by coconut crabs after munching her navigator. She was like the first Kardashian, her husband/ manager pimped out her name and likeness to everything he could. She wasn’t all that exceptional of a pilot, all the other aviators were annoyed by her. They only picked her to ride over the Atlantic for the first time bc she literally looked like Charles Lindbergh - so totally butch lol. Couple fun facts no one probably cares about: - she was very close to Elenor Roosevelt (wink wink) and after Amelia crash landed her state of the art plane in Hawaii during her first attempt they spent months repairing the plane and Roosevelt opened a bunch of air strips for her to make the journey going west to east - changing directions was the fatal mistake (along with not knowing Morse code and removing equipment to make it lighter and having an alcoholic for a navigator); initially she’d be flying from California to hawaii in the first leg. Since she was going the opposite direction she made the most difficult leg of the journey- finding a speck of sand that was the tiny island after a long journey, little gas and headwinds they didn’t account for. - there’s reports she was possibly enlisted by FDR to spy on what the Japanese were up to over in the Marshall Islands, he’d previously enlisted a millionaire playboy with a yacht to spy for prescient - I have a ton of redacted documents from the US government searching for her extensively on the islands and they thought she could have been taken prisoner by Japanese fishing men and turned into a Tokyo Rose as there were reports of a women speaking English on the radio. - circling the globe was the last major achievement in aviation at the time so it was a make or break situation for them financially. - I have a ton of original newspapers and since it’s 1937, it’s insane to see these little “in brief” mini columns updating everyone in what’s going on over in Germany and these camps they’re sending political prisoners to… TLDR - Amelia was a non-remarkable pilot who pushed boundaries.
