Rose Performance Research

I recently did a performance art piece as my final project for the first year of Waldorf Teacher training. I thought I'd share my research leading up to the performance with you all! This document includes brief descriptions of the significant parts of the performance (it was not recorded or photographed) along with my research and a bonus study on heart-focused flower essences. This is a good example of how much research goes into my pieces, although I don't usually have it organized in the ...

Chapter 29 & 30 - The Child in the Museum

Chapter 29

Amelia had been waiting with Claudette for what seemed like a long time. They anxiously sat in a small nook at the end of a hallway where there was a window looking out over the park, trying to see if they could catch a glimpse of the knight or the boy, but with no luck. The electricity had come back on in the Egyptian section, and a wide search had been going on to make sure all irreplaceable treasures were accounted for, but otherwise the museum had seemed to go back to nor...

Chapter 27 & 28 - The Child in the Museum

Chapter 27

Amelia tapped her foot impatiently, watching the boy talking to his mom and the staff member. They really didn’t have time to waste. She had spent the whole night training with the Philosopher, understanding as best she could the complexities of Egyptian magic, and everytime she asked a specific question about what to expect, he had answered, “You will know what to do.”

The last thing that the Philosopher said to her, at the end of the session, kept running throug...

Chapter 25 & 26 - The Child in the Museum

Chapter 25

Amelia sat on a bench near to the statue of Mother Mary, her typical place of calm, which happened to be the same statue that Arthur’s mom had decided to draw that day — although she had abandoned the drawing during all of the commotion. Amelia watched as staff members were still cleaning up fragments of broken ornaments, and talking amongst themselves. It seemed to be a huge mystery to them how the tree was able to move so violently, who was moving it, and how the orname...

Chapter 23 & 24 - The Child in the Museum

Chapter 23

That evening, Amelia made it back to the French section, her mind buzzing with ideas. When she entered the room, she saw Claudette sitting at her chair like normal, but something seemed to be different about her.

Before making her presence known, Amelia stared at her for a minute. Claudette seemed light as a feather, as if she wasn’t really sitting in the chair at all, but floating. She seemed more transparent than usual, almost barely there, and she looked like she h...

Chapter 21 & 22 - The Child in the Museum

Chapter 21

That evening, Amelia returned to her normal bedroom. She wished she could have told Claudette that she would actually enjoy trying out the different bedrooms, but if Claudette felt lonely, she didn’t want to push the idea.

She passed by the Queen’s chamber. It was the bedroom she had always most wanted to stay in, with its huge bed, glorious canopy of draped fabric, and many fine pieces of jewelry and furniture on display. There were cameras pointed in all...

Chapter 19 & 20 - The Child in the Museum

Chapter 19

Amelia perched on the upper level balcony, watching the comings and goings of the visitors in the entryway. The main hall was huge, with giant floral bouquets that got replaced every day with fresh flowers. After each guest got their sticker, depending on the direction they went in, they would either enter the Greek and Roman, Egyptian, or Medieval sections. Or, they could choose to climb the grand marble staircase to the next level.

Amelia often enjoyed people-watching...

Chapter 17 & 18 - The Child in the Museum

Chapter 17

Amelia felt better after her rest. When she woke up, she talked a bit longer with Claudette to reaffirm everything she had just learned. It was a lot to take in, but letting her mind rest in sleep helped her to absorb the information. She had told Claudette that she wanted to take a walk to clear her mind, but in reality she wanted to revisit the portrait: her portrait. She was already halfway there, though, and realized that she didn’t quite have the courage to go to her p...

Chapter 15 & 16 - The Child in the Museum

Chapter 15

Amelia gave up trying to reach the boy at this time. He seemed to be with someone at all times, and she was unable to catch him alone. She also got the feeling that perhaps he didn’t want her to catch him alone. He hadn’t offered her so much as a wave, a smile, longer eye contact – anything. She felt exhausted, down to her very bones. She wasn’t sure what was going on in her very body, much less the space and people around her. Amelia figured that this was a good time...

Calling Life Art

Today I want to tell you about one of my most inspirational influences as well as a new project I'm embarking on!

That person is Linda Mary Montano - you can check out her life and work online because she's an incredible figure in performance art, and I also consider her to be a friend and mentor of mine: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linda_Montano

So Linda really pioneered the idea of making art o...

Chapter 13 & 14 - The Child in the Museum

Chapter 13

As Amelia entered the Medieval section, she began to have the strong sensation that she was being watched. Every few feet that she walked, she would look over her shoulder to see who was there, but no one was to be found. The Medieval section was, in fact, eerily empty. As she entered, she heard a man speaking nearby. She walked swiftly to the doorway that overlooked the next section, the armory, where he heard the voice. But upon looking, she only saw the little boy, all...

Chapter 11 & 12 - The Child in the Museum

Chapter 11

Amelia watched the little boy talk to the short-haired lady worker. She had been keeping tabs on him all morning, as he entered the museum with his mom, and was escorted immediately to the kitchen, where he had been kept captive until now. She was confused, frustrated, and alone. Everyone was making such a big deal about Arthur misbehaving, but no one even noticed her for a second. Had she spent so long trying to make herself invisible that now she actually was? She sighed a ...

Chapter 9 & 10 - The Child in the Museum

Chapter 9

It was mid-afternoon and Amelia had not yet run into the young boy. She had planned to spend time investigating the Egyptian section, trying to figure out what the creepy shadow figure was, but every time she stepped into it she felt overcome with strange feelings. It was as if all of the items were buzzing with some sort of energy, like there was a hum in the room telling her to get out. And every time she could remember, she had quickly listened to it. It felt like she was h...

Chapter 7 & 8 - The Child in the Museum

Chapter 7

Amelia found the boy, finally. It had taken her so long before she realized that the mom was no longer in her usual spot drawing the statue. Amelia at least knew they were there because she passed her on her way to the entrance. She had hoped at the time that the mom wouldn’t see her or recognize her, and luckily, she didn’t. She figured, by deduction, that they must be in the upstairs portion of the museum now. It took her some time, but she located them within the musica...

Chapter 5 & 6 - The Child in the Museum

Chapter 5

Amelia wasn’t sure why she felt so compelled to tell the little boy the truth about how she lived her life. Perhaps it was something about the open curiosity of his eyes, or the genuine way he asked her questions. Either way, there was something about him that made her feel confident he had a trustworthy heart. The worst thing that could happen would be that he would tell his mom, making his mom concerned and alerting some authority figure to her existence. Then someone ...

Chapter 3 & 4 - The Child in the Museum

Chapter 3

Breakfast. Amelia’s stomach rumbled. She put a hand on it, hanging back in the shadows of a statue, sitting on a ledge looking as still and as innocent as possible, she watched a couple of guests coming in. An older gentleman with a wooden cane sat down at a table, with a coffee in a cardboard cup still steaming. He shifted his weight and pulled a single page of a newspaper out of his back pocket, took a pen from his breast pocket, and began to work on a crossword puzzle. Sh...

Middle Grade (ages 8-12) Children's Novel
First Edited Draft - Feedback is welcome! <3

Chapter 1

Amelia’s eyes fluttered open. Light streamed in through the large window overlooking the city. For as long as she could remember, she needed to be highly attuned to the change of light throughout the seasons. She also had trained her ear to pick up the sounds of the birds in the park next door. These skills became essential in getting her through ...

Painting Journey Part 4

This is my most recent body of work, and the shapes and colors have exploded into butterfly wings.

In the first three posts leading up to this one, you can see that the figure is the focus. Now, the focus is more external and more abstract.

In some ways, I think my focus has become more outside of myself in life too - I've always been focused on my interests and expression, but now that I'm a mom - I feel like my heart, in some ways, lives outside of my body.

I also think I'...

Thoughts behind "Chrysalis" a Performance and Installation Piece

I created this piece at a time in my life when I wasn't sure where I would call home. I was on the precipice of a new journey in life, in which there was much potential and many paths open to take. In this state of ungroundedness, I spent the day weaving myself a nest of a web in a tree. I then used that as a spot to center and meditate, and opened it up to viewers to meditate as well. In this piece, I proved to myself that I could create a place of safety even in the midst of transie...

Autumn Segment of "Turning" (Pt 2)

Hi everyone!

I thought I would share with you a section of my short film for each season as we come upon it. This is the (second) Autumn segment!

When I made this film, I was very focused on the textures and sounds of nature. I wanted to capture the energy of the season; of creating symbolic performative actions that gave a sense of caretaking and nurturing; of being inspired by and honoring nature through creating, also with the humble creation that nothing I can create wil...

Painting Journey Part 3

In the Painting Journey Part 2 you could see how color became important to my expression and how the figure was beginning to break free from the forest.

In these paintings, the figure begins to explore a more expansive landscape. In the last one shown on this post, the figure almost becomes the empty space - part of the air. You can still see the same forest influence, especially in the rhythmic forest piece with purple tones.

I find that as I get closer to my current work in pain...

Journaling as an Art Object

Today I want to share all of the ways I’ve used journaling as part of my performance and installation art pieces, since journaling is such an integral part of my daily life and it finds its way into a lot of my creative work as a process, as an object, and as an action!

I have:

Formed a dress from journal pages

Written small thoughts on rose petals

Wrapped stream of consciousness text around my body

Erased my journal pages and hung them from tree branches

Painting Journey Part 2

In the Painting Journey Part 1 post I talked about my drawings in which both a figure emerged from a forest and the fragments of the figure created a forest around it.

Here is where I brought this to oil painting! This series started in 2017.

As you can see - there's a whole lot of color! I found color to be an expressive tool for my inner emotional world and expansion during this time.

This was a time of finding myself in the world - who am I, what do I value, what am I abo...

My Interview with Arahmaiani on Performance Art

  1. What is unique about Performance Art to you? What sets it apart from other art forms?

Performance art is a unique art medium – communication with the audience can be direct and performers can convey creative ideas and messages in a more open and free way. Also could bcome a kind of participatory artictic form and dialogue.

The other art forms usually is more rigid technically – and communication with audince is different. And dialogue kind of communication is not p...

"sweep" Performance Piece in honor of my Grandad

Today I’d love to share with you a performance piece that I did in honor of my Grandad’s passing. I performed this four years ago in May, 2019 at Grace Exhibition Space for International Performance Art in NYC.

In this piece, I created a spiral of sand. I wrote messages to my Grandad with a walking stick along the the spiral, inwards and outwards.

A walking stick was an important object of his, and on a special walk with my family after his passing, we saw a walking stick lean...
