A controversial moment happened during Tuesday when Anna sent a few hot selfies to Chris. The two most common complaints have been: 1) it's not realistic, and 2) the reader didn't have a choice to prevent it.
Let’s take a deeper dive into this.
About it not being realistic...
On the surface, a happily, faithfully married woman sending her husband's horny best friend some sexy selfies appears far-fetched. But as the story explains, there's nuance behind it.
Anna developed a friendship with Chris rather quickly once they agreed to start fresh. She's the type to always respond to texts... she's sweet like that, so Chris took advantage of it and texted her a lot, which led to a lot of conversations. They spent hours upon hours over the course of a year texting with each other and developing a friendship.
Anna was quite surprised that she enjoyed talking to Chris. Growing up with three older brothers and having a lot of guy friends, Anna is comfortable talking to men. This always irritated David, that she was able to connect well with other guys, as it made him self-conscious. But that's how she's always been. Sure, Chris could be ridiculous in things he said to Anna, but she was used to it being around boys her whole life. Her older brothers were no strangers to saying vulgar things, but she still loved them all the same.
Chris asking for pics is not surprising whatsoever to Anna. She knows he's a horny guy who thinks she's attractive. There's been countless times that Chris has made suggestive comments to her... Anna has become numb to it. At times it used to bother her, but now she just laughs it off.
The thing about Anna - she wants to see the good in people. She gives people the benefit of the doubt. She respects people for who they are.
She wanted to see the good Chris too. Maybe even a part of her felt sorry for him that he can't find a steady girlfriend. Nevermind his flaws… Anna wants to focus on the side of him that can be good. Chris uses this kindness to manipulate her, and it gives him a thrill to try to break through her guard. Every story has a villain, right?
When she sent the pics, part of her mindset was, “whatever, it’s just Chris. He’s a horny guy who hasn’t been laid in a long time… if he wants to get off looking at me in a nightgown, I can do that for him this one time, and I trust he won’t tell David.”
Does she secretly get a thrill from it though? Does it make her feel good to be admired? Does the fact that she's dealing with hormonal issues distort her judgement? That’s what we don’t really know and won’t know until we play her story :)
As for readers being disappointed that they didn’t have a choice in the matter…
The events in Part 1 and 2 are largely kinetic, as I’ve said before. I have no desire to create an interactive novel that’s going to consume all my time and take years to develop… therefore, there’s a main plot that is unfolding and you can’t change it. Anna is going to be Anna, and David is going to be David. You will have the ability to influence them and even make some decisions for them, but you can’t do that at every turn in the story, especially in Part 1 & 2… that would be a massive undertaking to have a lot of different storylines going (see Eva Kiss's excellent work).
But as I’ve said before, the decisions you make in Parts 1 and 2 will shape the outcome of this story, even if it doesn’t feel like it. You can’t make Anna and David do whatever you want them to do, but you can be the person whispering in their ear, and you will have some decision-making capabilities.
