In terms of why Serie passed Methode, I believe it was due to her unwavering composure and her being pretty much good at everything. She even called herself a “jack of all trades” to Ehre before going to take on Fern’s clone. Throughout that labrynth exam, she was the only one besides Frieren during the boss fight that showcased her abilities in many different magic types: defensive magic, attack magic, hypnosis, restraining spells, and even healing spells. Her versatility and well-rounded abilities likely played a big part in Serie’s decision. Another thing to remember is that Methode managed to survive the rapid fire assault from Fern’s clone and holding it at bay, preventing it from advancing on the Frieren boss room. That final shot of Methode standing with all the holes in the walls behind her highlighted her endurance and strength, something that set her apart from the others who couldn’t withstand Fern’s attack (like what happened to Lugner and Ehre (the girl that hangs out with Wirbel). She came out unharmed. When it came to her interactions with Serie during the final exam, Methode wasn’t intimidated by Serie’s overwhelming power. While many saw Serie as intimidating, almost mythical figure, Methode viewed her as just another person that was just small and cute rather than something to be feared. This set her apart from other examinees who were intimidated by Serie’s presence.

I completely agree with your discussion about how the author excels at writing both guy and girl characters! It’s so easy for authors to focus solely on creating a strong male character that appeals to boys, young men, or adults through sheer badassery, but they often overlook those subtle vulnerable moments that make these characters relatable and show it’s okay to have certain feelings. One of my biggest gripes with shounen has always been how poorly female characters are often written. But in Frieren it’s a breath of fresh air. Every female character is genuinely enjoyable and also have moments to shine and really stand. It’s so refreshing to see female characters portrayed as strong and capable instead of just eye candy, accessories, or love interests for the male leads. Sorry for the long ass comment. I just love this anime so much… 😭 January can’t get here soon enough. Thank you so much for giving this anime a chance. I’m so glad you enjoyed it!!!!
