Anyone who gains mind control powers would very quickly realize that they are most valuable when essentially no one else knows about them. There is likely to be a balance between the foibles of a figurative lottery ticket winner, and to keep the secret and act judiciously. A fancy car impresses people, but attracting attention is not recommended. Driving a Honda makes sense as a reliable car that any college kid might be expected to have, but is the same true for becoming a cheerleader? Of course, being a cheerleader gives an excuse for hanging with a lesbian harem that is hidden in plain sight.

Two, it was a gift from her parents and has sentimental value. I imagine she probably wouldn't be able to get herself a Porsche without some complications.

Having powers does not yet extend to getting the best of everything, at least not yet. It makes me wonder if Amber was restrained at home, or otherwise isn't so foolish as to make her power and manipulations obvious? She shows the power of GPS--the wonders and the blunders of the tech. It's a bit of a metaphor for her power; she seems more a pro at using it than Amy in the other story, but Amber is quite the risk taker here.
