"So, how do I look?" Alice asked Emma and me as she did a twirl in her outfit for the 10th time. She had apparently spent hours preparing her outfit for the first day of our attendance at U.A. University. Being a University in this reality, UA obviously operated differently than in the anime. The most obvious thing being there were no uniforms for students. Most colleges didn’t require students to wear uniforms. Unless you chose to go to Shinketsu… they still had uniforms. To be fair, though, that school was a borderline military academy. Students that didn’t end up as pro heroes usually ended up enlisting in the country's armed forces.
Another difference was that Hero course students would only be together during Hero classes. Other than those, they would be taking any other classes with the rest of the student body. Heroism was a major in this university, but a lot of students double majored in something else for when their hero careers didn’t work out. Emma was also majoring in business. Alice had a second major in fashion… I was only majoring in Heroism because there was no way my career wasn’t working out for me.
"Once again, you look great, Alice," I responded. "Same as when you asked two minutes ago." Alice had gone out of her way to dress in her nicest outfit. In between her studying, she had no problems using her gifts to play with the stock markets of this world. She had no problems affording whatever she wanted at this point.
"Sorry," Alice said. "I’m just so nervous to be attending college for the first time."
"You deserve to be here. You studied for three months straight with no sleep," Emma said jokingly. Alice didn’t sleep at all as a twilight vampire…
"I suppose you’re right… number two," Alice said teasingly. Emma just made a ‘tsk’ sound in response.
"You only beat me in the entrance exam by 2 points," Emma said. Emma did not like losing. She was surprisingly competitive. Alice was the opposite and didn’t actually care about her score; she just found it fun to tease Emma.
The entrance exam was far different than canon, and these two were proof of that. Emma and Alice both did very well in the entrance exam and had even ended up sweeping the top two spots. Alice has the abilities of a twilight vampire, which include super senses, speed, and strength. Along with her gift of future sight, she was able to easily track down robot after robot to rack up points. Emma was on the other end of the point spectrum, as she was constantly using her telepathy to warn other students about ambushes. She got more hero points than anyone else by far. She could have used her diamond form to go out and destroy robots, but in her own words, “that would have been too much of a hassle…”
Instead of going through the front entrance, we chose to enter through one of the lesser-known side gates. It was a lot less likely for me to get mobbed by all the people who would be there to catch a glimpse of myself or Shoto Todoroki. Over the past few months, the inevitable sports festival match between the two of us had been severely hyped up online. Normally, most people don’t even bother to watch the freshmen compete. It’s usually an embarrassing affair where the aspiring heroes have only been training a little over a month and have no idea how to properly fight or use their quirks yet. This year was playing out to be far different. The battle between the daughter of the number one hero and son of the number two was going to draw a huge audience. People online were speculating hundreds of millions were going to tune in to it a month from now.
"Ugh, quit projecting your thoughts so loudly, Akane! I’m getting queasy just thinking about so many people watching the sports festival live," Emma said as we walked through the campus hallways towards the hero department rooms.
"How do you think I feel!" Alice exclaimed. "I’ve been having visions of the sports festival for over a month now, and neither of you two are letting me spoil it."
"Of course not!" That would take the fun out of it. I don’t want to know who’s going to come in second place!" I added.
"Of course she already believes she’s going to take first place," Emma muttered.
"Well…" Alice trailed off.
…
"Here it is. Class 1-A, the room where they put the students who actually have a shot at becoming heroes," I said as we stood outside the doorway.
Alice put her finger to her chin. "What about 1-B?" She asked.
"We don’t talk about 1-B…"
With that, I slid open the door so we could get a look at our classmates. The room was packed, and it looked like we were the last to arrive.
"Deku! How the hell did a quirkless failure like you make it into this school!? And you actually got a higher score than me!" A loud voice shouted out as soon as the three of us entered the room. I could immediately see Katsuki Bakugou berating Izuku Midoriya. The latter looked like he was about to start shaking from fright.
"That’s not it, Kaachan… I just… I want to be a hero too!" Izuku replied with a trembling stutter. Everyone in the classroom was looking at him oddly. I was the same. He wasn’t some shy 15-year-old kid coming out of middle school. We were in college, and everyone here was at least 18. The way he was acting was just sad now.
"Hi there! You must be Akane’s best friend, Momo! I’m Akane’s friend, Alice. I just know that we're going to be best friends as well!” Alice had zipped over in front of Momo at vampire speed to introduce herself. Momo jumped slightly, as from her perspective, Alice probably appeared out of nowhere. The man sitting behind her also seemed taken aback. I could recognize him immediately. It was ‘my rival,’ Shoto Todoroki.
It was at that point that all the other students in the room noticed that we three had arrived. Bakugou and Izuku were making such an embarrassing scene that no one had noticed we had come in.
“Whoa! It’s Ultragirl!” The first person to notice us was an exotic-looking girl with pink skin and horns on her head.
“The daughter of All Might! That’s so manly!” A boy with red hair and spiky teeth, who was talking to the pink-skinned girl, shouted out.
“Mademoiselle Ultragirl, you shine almost as brightly as myself!” That last one was the French student who I could vaguely recall from my memories had some problems. If that held up here, Emma would be able to suss him out quickly enough.
Emma and I walked over and sat down in two empty seats next to each other. “It’s nice to meet you, everyone. I’m Akane Yagi, otherwise known as Ultragirl. Nice to meet you all.” I smiled at everyone in the room as I introduced myself.
“Tcch… Who cares if you’re already a pro-hero in the top 20. It doesn’t matter because the next number one hero will be me!” Bakugo shouted at me from a few seats away.
“You’re wrong…” I felt a bit of a chill in the room. The one who had spoken up was surprisingly Shoto Todoroki. “The next number one will be me.” He boldly declared. He was much more outspoken than his canon counterpart. That made sense considering the age difference I supposed. He was also
“Bro, control your quirk, you're going to freeze the room!” The guy with tape elbows called out. I could not remember his name at this time. I’m sure I'll learn it later.
“It's so cold in here all of a sudden!” the electricity guy added.
Shoto Todoroki just ignored their comments though, as he sent me a freezing glare. He was clearly not happy with me for some reason.
“These past few months his dad has put him through some extreme training to try and make him measure up to you. He knows he can't measure up to his dad, so he wants to take out his frustrations on you instead…” Emma answered for me as she read Shoto’s mind. “Also, yeah, that French guy over there is a spy for a villain that was supposed to be dead. We’ll have to tell Nezu about him later.” Emma added on.
Yeah, we could tell Nezu about the French guy after classes today. There was no reason to cause a panic among the other students as of right now. As far as Todoroki was concerned, his vendetta against me has been acknowledged but will be ignored. I have more important things to deal with than his angsty drama. Shoto is an adult now. If he hates his dad so much, he should just leave home. UA also has optional dorms, after all.
“Alright, everybody, that’s enough. Take your seats and pipe down. Time is precious after all.” The man who was sleeping at the front of the classroom finally woke up and started speaking to us all. “I’m your primary instructor for the Hero course, Shota Aizawa.” The scraggly hero introduced himself to us. Alice zipped over to her seat next to Emma and me as everyone else still standing found their own seats.
Aizawa looked over all of us before a smirk formed on his face. “Not bad, you all don’t look as incompetent as last year's class did.”
“You mean that entire class that you expelled on the first day, sir?” I asked aloud. I laughed at the panic I had intentionally caused throughout the classroom.
“What!?”
“He expelled an entire class!?”
“He can do that?”
His smirk never left his face. “Of course I can do that. It’s my job to train the next generation of the world’s top heroes. If you can’t cut it, then you’ll be gone. Now head over to the locker rooms and get changed. It’s time for us to have a quirk assessment test. Those who don’t cut it will be gone by the end of the day. There’s plenty of other students waiting in the wings to take your places after all.”
