“We really need to prioritize stronger defences,” I said. “Training the locals is important, but we should try and put some more protection into place around the castle by the end of the day.”

“Let’s do that this afternoon,” the curly-haired soldier suggested. “After I’ve finished up with my lesson.”

“Yeah, these two might be awake by then.” I grinned and looked over at the sleeping girls on the bed. “I’ll come down with you to grab some food for Adhara.”

Kat finished getting dressed, and we both grabbed our rifles from beside the door before we headed out into the corridor. I had my glock holstered on my hip and my rifle swung over my shoulder, but part of me wondered if I should even bring weapons in to see the alien. If she felt scared, there was no way she would open up, but I reasoned that it was better to be safe than caught off guard when I was alone with a woman from outer space.

We made our way downstairs, and chatter drifted from the dining hall as we reached the lobby. There was already a good handful of people up and about, and the tables had been set up for breakfast. Kat sat down at the nearest table and poured herself a cup of coffee, and I started to pile a plate full of toast and fruit for Adhara. I shoved some grapes into my mouth while I did, and I took a sip of the coffee Kat offered me.

“Okay,” I said. “Good luck with training, don’t be too hard on them.”

“I wouldn’t dream of it.” Kat grinned. “Unless they’re compete fucking morons, and then I might have to get a bit military on their asses.”

“Justified,” I agreed.

I grabbed the plate of food and turned to make my way back up to Adhara’s room. I still had the key in my pocket from yesterday, and I was keen to try and make more progress with her. I had so many questions I wanted to ask, but I knew it might still be a while before she felt comfortable enough to talk to me openly.

I just hoped I’d be able to pretend I was patient even though my brain was fracturing with excitement from the second I reached her room.

Then I gently knocked on the door before I unlocked it and stepped inside.
