This occurs due to actual encounters between the two species near the estuary/lagoon where the river meets the sea. While these two species are capable of breeding, a River Chi is unable to survive for long periods in the ocean, and similarly, a Sea Chi cannot thrive in freshwater environments. They can only inhabit the lagoon area. However, Lagoon Chis born from this crossbreeding exhibit characteristics of both parent species and are capable of living in both the river and the sea. These unique Chis are warmly received by other members of their kind and often engage in friendly interactions.
