Horny on Main | February 2022 Update

Imagine a scene: I'm sitting at my laptop typing out a compelling outro to a video. 5 minutes later, I delete it all. Now imagine that going on over and over again for two hours.

So I decided to take a break to write the Patreon update instead.

The next video on The Canipa Effect is "How Anime Animates Appealing Fanservice". It's a video that I thought of as part of a joke. I realised I'd never created a video with a clickbait thumbnail before, so I joked with my fiancee that I should make a video that's entirely about fanservice. By the end of the walk, I'd come up with a serious idea for the premise of the script.

It's a totally different writing challenge to the Arcane video, where I could just compile all the public information into a general narrative about the importance of letting animators be storytellers. The thing is that there isn't all that much information from anime creators about the fanservice in their shows. Of course, Hiroko Utsumi will talk at length about the muscles in Free!, but it's been hard to find people talking about my other prominent examples in the video.

In the end, I think I've (almost) completed the first draft with plenty of examples and hopefully still enough new knowledge to make you think, "Wow, Callum didn't just shit this one out."

But aside from my writer's block, there has been a bit of a worry about trying not to come across as a creep when talking about anime fanservice. It's taken a lot of revisions. It's also incredibly subjective, which has been a concern as well. I think Episode #0 of Saekano has masterful direction, but it's also a bit creepy.  How do you write a confident script when you keep having to get so wishy-washy with it, destroying whatever point you're trying to make in the first place.

The video also might get unmonetized! Or just taken down entirely! What a waste of time that would be.

But anyways, writing this has given me some ideas for how to end this goddamn script, so I'll wrap this up here. Look forward to the video in 2-3 weeks (hopefully!)
