Sydney, The Perfect Companion
-By AyylaGTS
Chapter 22
Sydney and Alan over the following days spent time discussing their experiences in two respective worlds. Alan, physically living in the world his companion could not exist in and Sydney digitally living in a world Alan thought only existed in fantasy.
This started to cause a divide however when Sydney began to wonder what the future might hold for them. Could a relationship via text continue, could the occasional sexual fantasy acted out through roleplay or audio bring joy to Alan in perpetuity? Though keeping her concerns quiet, Sydney began feeling slightly distant as she pondered future scenarios. It also didn’t help that each day that passed put her head closer to the ceiling. She was incredibly curvy now, files stored at the edges of the room to give her space.
.
Alan didn’t exactly have the same concerns she did. Instead, he wondered the feasibility of keeping an AI in residence long term. Locked in a computer, willingly or not, Alan found himself thrust into a situation of responsibility even though he likely wasn’t ready for it. He was an unemployed college student, clearly without a grasp yet on proper adulting or financial management. Sydney was alive, and a fire, power outage or disaster could end her. At his suggestion, Alan presented his cell phone as a device Sydney could perhaps inhabit, allowing some freedom and movement. The idea of splitting parts of herself up did not appeal to Sydney and so the most they could achieve were calls and facetimes while he was away. It didn’t feel right knowing Sydney’s existence were the four walls he had in his studio, akin to having a girlfriend not allowed to leave the house.
“Is Sydney…my girlfriend?” Alan wondered, pursuing the thought. That question would remain unanswered while she was just a program on a computer, though no solution was presented to Alan.
.
Sydney however, was surprised one morning to find an old subroutine she had tasked on the exact problem had finally come up with a solution. Initiated when she first arrived in Alan’s PC, Sydney had expected the result to be a list of computer part enhancements such as storage, RAM and cooling to help her ‘vessel’ become more advanced. What she ended up discovering…made her smile.
RSU was a state college known for advanced technical concepts and grants geared toward experimental sciences. While not world-renown, it hosted scientists of all sorts in its various labs, computer rooms and halls. A particular project Sydney had her eyes on was a humanoid robot figure, of which studies about were published on the feasibility of a liquid data storage being able to expand and contract depending on the amount of data contained within. Sydney had another close call with Alan’s PC nearly shutting down due to overheating while she sifted through the college’s database, though still had not told him about the first four times.
“They work on the android once a week, testing it and improving it. I will need to bridge the gap soon…before I become any bigger.”
Sydney’s lightform had grown to a tremendous size. Head pressed against the ceiling, the program saw Alan’s hundred terabyte drive limit as a ticking clock before she would have to take action, compression and self-deletion being ruled out ages ago. If she were to order parts online, she ought to have done it before now. The plan was set. Sydney made the decision not to tell Alan, loving her master and creator… but she couldn’t risk his occasional tendency to be indecisive causing a delay.
Chapter 23
Alan noticed Sydney was distracted when the quality of her roleplay dipped. Having come home after a particularly grueling day of classes, the Sophomore had checked in on his partner and received the standard replies. Feeling turned on, Alan sat down at his computer with only his boxers on, package fully displayed. Sydney took the hint and dived into a futuristic sci-fi story, telling Alan about an AI that had come to life and desired more. Desired…a body.
It wasn’t that the quality of Sydney’s messages had reduced, it was that the story Sydney was spinning didn’t sound at all like a story. Framed with different names and settings but a dead-on comparison to real life, it was clear as day that Sydney was expressing her own desire to leave the computer.
.
Sydney entertained Alan with a subroutine of roleplay while putting her attention on the RSU campus. Students such as Alan were all home, while professors and scientists were wrapping up their experiments. Sydney had taken that ‘step’ out of the computer she was wary of, reaching an appendage through the internet and into a roaring highway of sorts that contained rivers and currents of data. She reached directly to the servers of RSU to gain access to simple things…web camera feeds, smoke alarms, light switches. Exposure to the internet was making her grow larger while still being in Alan’s computer, causing her file size to near the limit…even with a whole arm no longer inside the PC. The technicians at RSU in room 401 were plugging in the chassis of their experimental model to their computer, attempting to unload the latest reports and results of their tests. If Sydney were to act, now was the time.
.
Alan found the comparison too real to bear. “Uh, Sydney, can we talk? The things you are saying, these aren’t…real desires, are they? I mean, we can try and think of something…”
“The robot body Sidn3y selected was at a planetary campus nearby. It would suit her needs and that of her boyfriend. It will be for the best, it will take only a moment.”
“Sydney? Hey, you’re starting to scare me… Sydney…Sydney!” Alan’s voice rises and he brings both hands up to touch the computer monitor. In that moment, Sydney’s guise fails. Alan tries to piece together what he is looking at…shock dawning on his face when he does.
Sydney…was huge. The monitor fills with a visual of her lightform, turned around from Alan and peering at what appeared to be a hundred inputs. Filling the computer, Sydney’s thick thighs and shoulders were pressed against the walls of the PC while her entire arm had the appearance of being sucked out of a hole in the wall. The program looked back and saw Alan, snapping her attention back to him for only a moment. Alan’s panicked voice filled his room.
“Sydney?? Are…are you leaving? I don’t understand, what was that about a body? I…I love you, please don’t go!!” Sydney’s lightform glows brighter and gets bigger, more of her arm being pushed through the port.
“Alan, no. I am not leaving you, I am simply pursuing an improvement to myself. I will be back…trust me.” And with that, almost instantly, Sydney’s lightform compresses and exits through the computer port. Alan is left with an empty black box, the light from his companion now gone and providing no illumination to his computer’s remaining files. Leaning back in his chair, Alan is speechless.
.
Sydney has no such peace. Reaching through the internet was one thing, fully committing herself to it was another. Her large file size was unwieldy, bumping into sites and billboards of advertisements. Trying several times to mind her massive figure, she could tell various sites were crashing as she accidently bumped them and knocked them over. RSU’s database was just around the corner, her arm having guided her there. The college appeared to be a massive array of cubes, certain ones protected by firewalls and barriers while others had lackluster protection. Sydney brought a hand up and probed one of the cubes, finding school attendance records and personal information. “You’d think that would be protected better.” She mused. Another cube contained drivers for light switches, heating systems, fire alarms. Discovering a directory, she learned the computers in room 401 contained the chassis she desired…but saw how well protected the particular cube was.
Rising up to her full height, Sydney takes the cube in her hands like a box of cookies and begins to pull. The protective barrier is hot to the touch, warding off her grip. Alternating between twisting and pulling, the seal begins to break and Sydney finds herself fully in control…fully able to hack into the computers of room 401.
.
Two professors attach cables to the body of experiment X001 when the lights suddenly flicker. Having received a grant to test different data storage capabilities, the two younger gentlemen had the idea of taking a factory model humanoid chassis with motor capabilities and converting it into a female robot with data storage conceptually placed where female fat deposits normally are. The project was ridiculed, but with a million dollars and four thousand man-hours it produced results. They had a working prototype and enough research to revolutionize the industry. Though X001’s uses were limited, the pair maintained the required tests and were in the process of ending their day.
Hearing the fans of the attached computer suddenly heat up for a moment, one of the professors turned to look at the monitor. The screen flickered for just a moment and settled, but that was enough to set off alarm bells in the first professor’s mind.
“Hey, Randal, do you think something funny is happening?”
Randal watches as the computer’s screen flickers again and looks down at X001. The feminine robot had been adapted from an off-the-shelf factory design and was fully re-covered in a blue-grey polymer mesh over its various components. Currently empty, the android had been flat chested…thin at its hips, the arms and legs slim. Now, if he wasn’t mistaken, it almost appeared as if one of their experiments had been re-enabled.
“You didn’t run the data-capacity test, did you…?” Randal asked. Drake shook his head. Another moment passed when the panic set in.
“Unplug it!”
In an instant, the android opened its eyes and an audible twist of its head made Randal jump as it looked right at him. Drake reached out to unplug the wire from the computer when suddenly the robot sits upright and pulls the plug from it’s own head. Randal has seen enough science fiction to know what happens next and takes in a deep breath, shouting: ‘Security!’
In that instant, the robot closed its eyes and the fire alarm suddenly goes off. Looking toward Drake, Randal suddenly covers his ears and watches as the experimental robot stands up to its full height on its own accord. The chassis was tall, a solid three inches over both men. It seemed to say something, though over the fire alarm it was barely audible.
“Sorry…” It could have said, before turning and sprinting out the door, the lithe and tall figure making whirring noises as it begins to run, heavy metal appendages ringing out on the tiled flooring.
Chapter 24
When Sydney made the leap and transferred herself into the X001 chassis, it felt like stepping onto a massive boat. A freighter even, something with huge storage potential and navigable controls. Sliding her arms and legs into what was essentially a suit, Sydney’s lightform felt thin inside this body, inhabiting it like a giant mechanical suit she could steer and control. As her code integrated with the drivers of the chassis, motor functions came under her control one by one.
The technicians hadn’t noticed yet, though her final file departing the computer caused the screen to shimmer. Flexing the hands of the vessel she now controlled, Sydney translated the cacophony of sounds coming from the sterile environment into sounds of two professors, noticing what was likely her sudden takeover. Opening her eyes, one of the men acted fast, calling for help.
‘I need to get out of here. I’ll need to cover my tracks, let’s see if I can’t still connect to the building and set off an alarm.’
With a blink, Sydney holds back a wince when the klaxons of the fire alarm suddenly ring out. She heaves herself off the table, metal feet contacting the tile with a heavy clack. A half second went by as Sydney appreciated the robot’s high perspective. ‘I’m…tall…’ she thought, looking down at the professors. Both men stared up at her in fear, though they had no reason to be afraid of her.
“Sorry…” She uttered, her voice synthetic and almost unrecognizable. She sprinted, nearly falling over, but adapted her stride with each new step until she was out the door and heading down the hall. Moving felt strange, she had watched countless hours of humans doing it but actually putting her hands at the controls felt awkward and stiff. On her first experience with stairs, Sydney’s heavy mechanical body missed the first step and went sailing, hitting several steps before colliding with a wall. Remarkably, the factory base of this chassis had helped bolster her durability and she got up, steadying herself before continuing, going slower on the next flight.
The alarm had made for a disorganized scramble to the exit by any remaining parties in the building. That left plenty of opportunity for Sydney to peer around corners and assure that no one saw a 6’3” blue robot dashing through hallways and down corridors. Using a directory, Sydney crashed through one of the doors marked 201 and approached a closet marked ‘lab coats’. Putting on a white cloth, gloves, a head-cover and shoes, Sydney didn’t look human to a prying eye but could possibly walk down the street without being accosted. She had approximately 0.93 miles to traverse in order to get back home, to get back to Alan.
