"I just wish she'd have said something!" And if she had, you'd probably have reacted with hostility or disbelief. And so she kept it hidden, but now you use that to question her. Kids get put in an impossible situation, because nothing they'll do will "please" you, because what you want isn't to know the real them, it's to have your assumptions and expectations for them confirmed.
