Here's another issue of "Monthly Animal House", the magazine that came before "Young Animal". This is the February 1992 issue, where the first segment of volume 5 was first published. I wanted to show the index page this time because it highlights the simple numbering system they used.
The title page of the manga itself goes with a relatively fancy subdivision name: 戦慄のヒーロー伝奇 REVENGE15. It translates to "the fantastical story of the thrilling hero, revenge 15", as I had explained in a previous post. But on the index, it's just BERSERK 15. Straight to the point.
When Monthly Animal House was retired in favor of a modernized semi-monthly magazine (Young Animal), its series moved to the episodic numbering system that Berserk still uses today. That's why "episode 001" of the series is in the middle of volume 5. Although, in truth, this is transparent if you read the volumes anyway, as the numbers aren't indicated in them.
You'll notice on the index that there are no author comments. Those were also introduced with Young Animal, and Miura was the one who suggested it at the time!
Lastly, on the bottom of the title page is advertised that the first three volumes of the series are available. In truth it's a bit hard to imagine these early times for the series, at least for me.
