Learning Japanese with Berserk: Conviction

The Conviction arc (断罪篇, pronounced DANZAI HEN) in Berserk is named after the nickname given to the temple of Saint Albion (聖アルビオン寺院, pronounced SEI ARUBION JIIN), which is the "Tower of Conviction" (断罪の塔, pronounced DANZAI NO TOU).

The key word here is 断罪, and it's worth noting that "conviction" can be a misleading translation for it. The dictionary defines it in English as "judgment (of a crime); conviction; condemnation." It is therefore not at all a reference to "conviction" in a religious or moral sense, but of course to the judgment rendered there by inquisitor Mozgus on a variety of poor people, which culminates with him sentencing Casca to be burned at the stake.

Interesting. That's good to know, because I always assumed it had to do with religious conviction.
