Learning Japanese with Berserk: Lost Children
Added 2021-12-19 10:33:29 +0000 UTCWell, I'd say I "gotcha" with this one, but the picture pretty much gives it away. I'm talking about the fact "Lost Children" is actually written in katakana from English, of course. It's a direct transliteration, which gives us ロスト・チルドレン (ROSUTO CHIRUDOREN).
You'll notice the use of that middle black dot (nakaguro) we learned about in the entry for "God Hand", too.
Anyway, why the choice of katakana here instead of kanji? No reason that I know of, but it might be because Miura got the idea for this chapter of the story from the Cottingley Fairies incident in England. From those two girls who made fake fairies photos, he was inspired to create Jill and Rochine (and her fake elves).
It's also a good reminder that there's more to Japanese than kanji, which is important given how much they use loanwords.
