Midland's old name

In volume 10, as they descend below the Tower of Rebirth, Charlotte tells Guts, Casca, Pippin and Judo about the building's history and Midland's past. Near the end of that tale, she explains that the name "Midland" (ミッドランド) comes from how the capital city of Gaizeric's empire was called in ancient times: 国の中央の地.

This translates as: "Land in the center of the country".

Why do I bring this up? Well, you guessed it, Dark Horse messed up that translation. They put it as "Land in the middle of nations", which is confusing and seems to result from a misinterpretation.

Charlotte is referring to a time where a single country spanned the continent, a great empire united by Gaizeric. The capital city was situated in the center of that country, hence its name. A thousand years later, Midland is now in the midst of other nations, but that's not what Charlotte was talking about.

As a side note, the word used for center (中央) here can also carry the meaning of a place where a central government is located.

P.S. You might be wondering why I'm spelling Skull Knight's name as "Gaizeric" with a 'z'. It's not a mistake, but I'll keep the explanation for another post.

Thanks for the post! We know that the city that was once called Midland became Wyndham, situated IN the kingdom of Midland. But I wonder what the name of the empire itself was.

Yes, I was indeed wondering about the spelling of Gaizeric. 😛 I’m looking forward to the post explaining it.
