Suddenly, Chihaya's head popped up above the surface. She was in the back of a cabin, and it still took a few moments to realize she was in a pocket of breathable air.
"Glup, guulp!! Puff, puff, pufff."
Chihaya coughed violently and vomited out the water she had swallowed. She was safe. I never knew air could taste so sweet, Chihaya thought. Aya, who had surfaced first, was perched on a bench and looking down at Chihaya, treading water with her feet. Surprisingly, she was not even out of breath after the extended breath held dive.
"I, can’t, believe, I made it," Chihaya gasped, her eyes hurting and her throat sore after gulps of saltwater.
"Yes, you did it, Chihaya," Aya smiled down at her older cousin. Chihaya’s face was all wet and was still foaming in the corners of her lips as she treaded in the water. Eventually, she lifted her body and found her way up onto the bunk bed by the wall. The top bunk and the round porthole beside it seemed to be the only furnishings that were not submerged. And through that opening, Chihaya saw faded blue sun shine in and make patterns inside the cabin after traveling down to the depth of thirty plus meters.
