Oh man, I know the screen is piss-poor by today's standards but in mid 90s I wanted one of these SO BADLY! My cousin had one and sometimes he'd let me play Sonic or Batman, and at the time I didn't have any kind of console (handheld or station) or a computer so his Sega Genesis was my only chance to play video games. Thank you for the trip down memory lane!

I know this is a month old but I feel it’s important to say that with the TV Tuner and the right cables, it is possible to watch films on it. Shrek has never looked so good.

What is that screen? Like, back then most displays were cathode ray tubes, how the hell would they fit one in that? Then again, I suppose they did fit them in old camcorders as the viewfinder, so small CRTs do exist I guess.

Game Gears are pretty notorious for rotting away. Probably needs capacitor replacements. There are replacement screens that you can actually see on as well. The GG screens were a blurry mess when they came out.

Oh, I had two of these. I had a normal one that I sold, I then had a majesco branded game gear, but that one released the magic smoke if you know what I mean, and burned up. And that’s why I stick with emulation handhelds.

While the gamegear's screen was never good, it wasn't originally this horrible. The capacitors go bad with age and make everything even worse. It's a pain in the ass to replace all of em, though I'd bet your mate james knows how to do it. There's also the McWill screen mod, which replaces it with a proper modern LCD.

God I love the Game Gear, got one recently and it's the single jankiest console I own. Luckily it had been recapped by the place selling it, because looking inside after getting it I noticed that one of the caps blew up hard enough to scorch the CPB and required wires to replace the dead traces. Beautiful console I tell you!

If you're careful about your volume, you don't need to worry about headphone user alerts. A tip from me: play the loudest audio you have on you, then slowly raise the volume to the loudest point that it is still comfortable. That is your ideal volume level, sudden sounds may scare you but they won't hurt your ears.

I had one of these when I was tiny! Loved using it in the backseat in car rides until I'd get sick everywhere.

You should check out the screen replacements they have out for them now. Super clear horrible games :)

I had a Game gear as a kid, pretty sure the screen looked nicer when it was new.. I didn't have the master system adapter though, would have loved that lol.

So it looks like your SEGA Portable has a corrupted screen issue, I had one not to long ago with the same issue, a simple fix to see it again would be to lower the frame rate at which your camera on your phone (or other camera) is recording at and do some lighting changes. Also great extra video man!

Game Gear has issues with the capacitors going bad and they need to be replaced. Did that for a friend of mine a while back. Result of bad capacitors is just that it turns the terrible color screen into an abysmal color screen.

Impossible Mission is legit great but god, as someone who owned and loved a Master System (and still has one now) the Game Gear was such a pile. All the Master System games you love but hella zoomed in to the point of being unplayable. Like the ports of the Master System Sonic 1+2 are hella bad because you can barely see ahead of you. At least someone's working on porting Sonic Chaos into the Sonic Advance engine.

Me dad drive us to Walmart in year, where mom and him went in and I opted to stay in the car. They cake back, and dad had bought a game gear, case, and several games. They were on sale. It was the first time he said it was his system. Still, he let me play it under his supervision. The screen worked amazing. He still has it.

This was not the after show to put in an earbud and listen without watching while I make food. Mistakes have been made.

If you have the time and the patients there is a mod for the game gear that will replace the screen with an LCD. It’ll give you better battery life and while you’re at it do replace the capacitors.

I still have my GameGear from when I was a kid, and yeah the sound is blown on it, but I had and still have the greatest accessory ever: the giant attachable magnifying lens screen adapter. Probably the only reason my eyesight is still passible. Also, I had the Tassie Devil game, which in like 30 years I’ve never been able to get past the first level. Terrible.

As others have mentioned I'd suggest getting a capacitor replacement kit and even a new modern screen fitted since those will make the unit feel like new.

The Game Gear is notorious for capacitor problems, and yours is no exception. I'm surprised the sound still works as well as it does, but the screen...oof. Normally, GameGear screens look really vibrant and crisp, though a bit laggy because of slow refresh rates, but when the pesky caps start to go bad, the image just fades out into oblivion.

As has been said, that Game Gear needs a recap! It'll look so much better, and you won't have to deal with it turning off randomly like it did during Rocky. Only problem: recapping it is an absolute nightmare, because the caps are SURFACE MOUNT. It's even more annoying than opening a 3rd gen nano.

The Game Gear has a stinky old screen with a shite response time that uses an ACTUAL FLUORESCENT TUBE as backlight, those things burn out and become really dim after enough time so most people do LCD mods on this absolute unit of a nugg. improves visual fidelity AND battery life.

The Game Gear was one of the first gaming things I ever had, certainly the first mobile gaming experience I had. I got it from my older brother. Still works after all these years, and I even got a whole case.
