Art Tip: White Object Shadows

Hi everyone. Happy Art Tip Tuesday.

Someone on the discord asked an art question about whether you can use gray to shade white objects. I turned this into an art tip with some examples.

A white object will still have color on it from the color of the lights reflecting off of it. If you remember your science classes: white surfaces reflect all colors of the visible spectrum, so when a colored light hits a white object, the object will appear to match the color of the light. This applies even in the shadows where weak bounced light from the surroundings hit the object.

So long answer short: The shadows of a white object should have some color to them, my advice is avoid using pure gray when possible.

Hope that helps. As always, feel free to ask questions or request a new art tip.

Thanks!

Hi Lintbox! Sorry the delayed response. Yes, this was done in clipstudio. I use some custom brushes but most of them are very basic (essentially just the Oil Paint brush with the color mixing turned off and opacity pressure turned on and a custom brush tip shape). For the animations: It depends, some where done in blender grease pencil and others were done in clipstudio. I find clip studio is easier to use and allows me to use my usual brushes. Hope that helps! Feel free to DM me any other questions.

Is this in ClipStuioPaint? Interested to know about your toolset/tools list. Appreciated!! Found you through a random animation online. Curious what tooling you use for that because I can count maybe five apps that do it... but have not dove into many beyond CSP and ToonBoomHarmony.
