Unseen Footage: One Night in a War Zone - Sarajevo War Hostel [BTS 9]

In this video, I spend a night in the War Hostel in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, which simulates an experience that was a living hell for so many during the Siege of Sarajevo from 5 April 1992 to 29 February 1996.

Would you stay here? Do you know of any similar places? Let me know in the comments.

This experience was done for the BBC travel show I host, so it won't be on my YouTube, but I wanted to give you awesome Patrons a private perspective.

While those who haven't lived through war can't ever imagine what it is truly like, this experience is one you should try if you find yourself in this city. Putting yourself through challenging situations on purpose makes you stronger for when you need to be. The point of the motto “experiences over possessions” is as much about this idea as it is about travel.

It was intense, man. I can't even imagine what it would be like adding in the real danger.

Wow. This was powerful. It's remarkable how a simulation can evoke powerful and profound thoughts. As you said, it can't recreate the sense of danger that anyone living in a real warzone must feel. That's something I can't even begin to imagine. But in the context of something like this, sometimes being by yourself in an uncomfortable situation, with only your own thoughts to keep you company, is the best way to grow and learn about yourself. Thanks for sharing your experience with us, Mike.

I can't imagine what that was like. Like I said in the video, I had nothing at stake but a night's sleep. Living in a war zone would be unending stress. You never know what is going to happen or how bad it is going to get.

I don’t remember much when the Edsa revolution was happening in the Philippines. I just remember that my parents won’t let us go outside as it was unsafe. Military would march outside of our house. I remember seeing helicopters and tanks. There was chaos everywhere. My parents had backpacks for us ready to go just in case it turned to worse. To be honest, I don’t even remember how we got through with it.
