His owner begged the JRA to give an outer post for the Derby, essentialy allowing Maruzensky to participate in the race, but not getting ranked, just so he could prove his strength. This request was denied. The changes made to the JRA rules allowed for both late entries and foreign horses, but at a far higher entry fee for each race than normal.
