I think it's to correct an issue where these schoolgirls seemingly have their careers over in school. So it allows a higher league to exist they can move on to that is seemingly more casual and wouldn't strain someone who is older as much. (Which is why I can see McQueen racing here, she'd get lots of recuperation after a race with less practice). The grey haired guy is gold ship's groomer, I think. They had a very close relationship in real life. Orfevre is actually gold ship's brother irl, one of the best modern race horses. Probably the best in the family. Gentil Donna, infamously, was the only female horse that intimidated gold ship.
