The race in the time skip of s1 was a " winter dream trophy" event. It's never stated, but I imagine someone like McQueen could go to the "dream league", participate in special events with less year round training. It's one of the benefits of being a horse GIRL. easier to make nuanced choices. Teio is the best . The anime actually skips over one of Teio's big irl wins. Between the second and third fractures, when he was mostly struggling, he actually won the Japan cup in 1992. This was huge for Japan, since they had mostly struggled in their own event with mostly foreign winners. Teio was the first jp win in 7 years and started a new run of success. This is partially why he remained so popular even after the injuries. He's a national hero.

Here's the last tidbits of the season - Teio's miraculous win at the Arima Kinen was his last race before retirement. My guy had to get one last win in before calling it quits - I was gonna mention McQueen's fate, but you looked that up, so instead, I'll just mention that he sired Stay Gold (among many others), who is the father of Gold Ship and several other Umas you may meet in the future, namely Dream Journey, Nakayama Festa, Orfevre, and Fenomeno - The OP "Yume o Kakeru" is named after the IRL photo album of the same name that released after Teio's retirement
