i can see people taking that point of view, and i myself was iffy in that scene lol. But Renako doesn't push her back (at least not even slightly hard) and is clearly flustered, she WANTS to be friends but also very clearly is having feelings for Mai as well. Mai noticed this which is why she said if it had been a week ago she wouldn't have done anything. But she noticed changes in Renako and understood how she thought better.

As someone who is starving for real friendship, she wants that bff vibe of girls who are friends and share experiences together. Sure, friendships dissolve. They're not permanent. But they definitely feel more permanent than a first love. I feel she thinks a first friend anchors her and gives her stability more than the passion of a first love. Blonde girl would be better suited in getting her more female friends and not get jealous. That would stabilize renako's anxiety a little.
