My understanding from what we saw is that the worm was responsible for the parents killing themselves, while evil eye was unconsciously protecting the children, just like he was protecting Jiji, but after seeing those children get sacrificed over and over for 200 years he got corrupted and turned from spirit to yokai, just like acro-silky turned after finding Aira.
