that's really cool, and considering this takes place in a kinda "fictional" 15-16th century it would make sense that they wouldn't readily have mirrors considering what you said here about Venice

Most of them didn't really work, but the ancient Egyptians were onto something with urinating on grain and if it germinated, the person is pregnant. Seems like that's about 70% true. There is a hormone produced by the placenta, found in a pregnant woman's urine or blood, but that wasn't known until the early 20th century. I also researched mirrors. Venice had a monopoly on good, large, glass mirrors in the 16th century which were very, very expensive, until someone stole the technique. But there is a rich complex worldwide history that involves numerous materials.
