The Apothecary Diaries Season 1 Finale/Episode 24 Reaction

Comments

Wow I nEVER noticed his monocle breaking before, good catch! Anyway, I see three main factors behind Maomao not liking Lakan even tho she knows he's not a monster: 1) The jealousy factor some other commenters already mentioned 2) even though he didn't MEAN to fuck up her mother's life, he... well... STILL DID fuck up her mother's life 3) What 17/18 year old girl DOESN'T kinda hate their dad? or at least have some beef with him. That terrifying face might have just been an "UGH what kinda cringe shit did that weirdo say THIS time" face

I just remembered that I neglected to mention that Lakan also seems to have instigated the investigation into the seaweed poisoning. Gaoshun said a colleague had brought it to him. I think they showed a silhouette of Lakan at that time.

She seems to be jealous of people she thinks are smarter than she is. Lakan, Luomen, Fengxian, and even Suirei. She doesn't see her own good qualities, not just intellectually, but she downplays her appearance and status as well. It doesn't seem to manifest the same way as it might in most anime. Understandable given her experiences. Jinshi also once said he was only slightly better than average in intellectual and physical ability, but I think others don't necessarily see him that way. Anyway, here it seems Jinshi and Maomao have something in common. They still try their best, with some exceptions.

I have been watching this series over and over for the last month or so with different reactors, and I am still picking up new stuff, and making new connections. I am also reading the light novel, and apparently there are two manga adaptations as well as the webnovel and there's a novel, too. Anyway, Volume 1 of the light novel is actually skimpier than the anime, at least slightly. There's hardly any more information than the anime, and the anime has stuff in it, mostly character interactions, that aren't in the light novel. I have also read some of one of the manga. They give a different angle in some places. But even there, it's hard to confirm or deny any of the mysteries in the anime more completely, to answer questions about Lakan, Jinshi, Maomao, etc. The only thing that seems a bit different, enough give an alternative interpretation, is they way Meimei was hoping Lakan would buy her out, and was disappointed when he didn't. But I forget how it was that he chose Maomao's mother, if she didn't point it out. But I think in the anime, at least, Lakan bought out both Fengxian and Meimei. (1) Meimei likes Lakan. (2) Meimei used to be Fengxian's maid. (3) And here's something I didn't notice until now. When the women were dancing at Verdigris House, Pairin and (third Princess whose name I forget) were standing on the balcony above them. Not Meimei. (4) They said the courtesan who was bought out is never seen in public. But there had to be an excuse for such a big celebration. Someone had to no longer be there. I guess it must have been Meimei. I don't know if it was clear, but the face that Lakan saw on Fengxian, is what he saw. But in reality it is a face with sores all over it. Somehow he didn't see that. In Volume 2 of the LN, it isn't until about halfway through that the story begins to contain more than the anime, and more so in Volume 3, where I am only about halfway through. Yet I am not getting much more info to solve the mysteries than in the anime, still. Actually, it's the anime that makes the story great, imo. Suirei's incident handled secretly--meaning the whole thing was kept secret from the public, because she disappeared, I think. Was the lizard tail incident in this season? If not, forget about it. In any case, I wonder if Maomao's mentioning that if you cut off the tip of your little finger, it will grow back, is a subtle reference to a certain part of Jinshi's anatomy? Here's a mystery I have yet to solve. During the garden parties and just in daily life in the outer palace, people think Jinshi is a eunuch. Some military and/or officials were jealous of the attention this young eunuch was getting from the emperor. Yet at the first garden party, they said the brother of the emperor was (maybe?) at the party. He was walking around with the hairpin that gives away his true status. At the ceremony where he almost got killed, he was there in front of at least a hundred people who are....what? Officials? I sincerely doubt anyone could fail to recognize that Jinshi is the same heavenly maiden as this very high-ranking noble who isn't supposed to be a eunuch. I mean, look how much trouble Maomao had to go to disguise him. So why don't people seem to know who he is? Is there really no overlap between the 100 or so attendees at the ceremony and the officials and military officers (supposedly the highest-ranking) who attend the garden parties? Someone has to know. What about Loulan's father? I find him to be the most suspicious.

Referring to my comment a few episodes back, I am still not convinced that the swap occurred. I admit it seems pretty likely, but I think even the main participants aren't sure themselves, or some of them.

I look forward to season 2 reactions coming my way very shortly!

that makes a LOT of sense, maybe there was just so much going on, but i feel like this wasn't conveyed SUPER well to be completely honest

bluest

Maomao's dislike of Lakan is only partly due to her finding his desire to act as her father weird. The biggest part is because he is praised so much by her adoptive father, who was revealed to be Lakan's uncle in the previous episode. She is VERY jealous of Lakan for being recognized and praised by Luomen despite him being extremely lazy, while she hasn't been able to receive that level of praise despite working so hard for it.

Aditya Chakrabarti

yeah no i did NOT notice that at all XD, the implications of that are wild though

bluest

Great reaction! Maybe I missed it in the video, but did you notice that Lakan's Uncle was thrown out of the rear palace? Lakan's Uncle, the one who taught him to see people as chess pieces, is Maomao's adopted father. So the whole baby swap situation had even more far reaching effects

rogueknight

Wow I'm slow, I did not pick up even SLIGHTLY on that clumsy uncle being Luomen. Wow....... that actually adds so much weight and makes so much sense why he picked her up.

bluest

The chain of events in this series is crazy when you think about it. Ah Duo swaps her baby (Jinshi) with the emperors -> This causes Lakans uncle (and Maomaos adoptive father) to be exiled from the palace for not noticing the swap -> This causes Lakans father to send Lakan away for 3 years -> This causes Maomaos mother to inevitably contract syphilis and so on and so forth. It's really incredibly written.
