I don't know if Fengxian loved Lakan or just thought that he was better than the others vying to buy her out. I wonder if the story about the other courtesan who was betrayed by the rich merchant's son is supposed to be compared to this other tale of seeming abandonment. But you can see that the women hate these types of guys. Lakan's ironic sin isn't that he went away, it's that a brilliant strategist like him didn't even consider the idea that the buyout fell through because she was pregnant. He was either naive or self-involved or complacent, I don't know which.
