I'm back for my yaps in the comments! gotta catch up on your reactions. Not sure if you would be answered regarding why the price is so high, but essentially, the rink is "reserved" (cost of that split between everyone on it), you'll generally have a 1 on 1 with the coach during that time (basically hourly fee for the coach), and that's just the start when you only have one coach. Olympians and other big professional skaters have a team of coaches. Which then adds to another thing. I think it's an Asian mentality with sports as my dad was like this too, if you're playing a sport that they're paying for, you have to compete otherwise there is no point. That's why there are all these club Anime about competing in a tournament (See something like Flower and Asura) Additionally, I think its a belief that the more competitive you are, the more motivated you will be with other things in life and not lazy? At least that's my own personal take away from it.
