The scarf was Eren's, he gave it to Mikasa when he saved her from the guys that murdered her parents in season 1. If you want something as good as AoT I would suggest Elfen Lied, Gantz or Claymore if you want the gritty gory action or Code Geass and Full Metal Alchemist, for the politics and war aspects (also action packed).
