Everything seemed somewhat normal in the beginning, and little by little everything gets turned on its head, and you don’t know why. You just know you want to get out. The Guy in the Bear suit creeped me out the most as a kid. After many watches over the years, I’ve begun to notice that something was “Off” about Jack from the beginning. He seemed to be acting like a nice normal guy, while underneath, he was already going insane. Which is probably why the Overlook Hotel affected him so. I’ve heard a lot of the theories, and watched the documentary Room 237, but I don’t remember a lot of details. The one thing that I always notice now, is that when Jack is waiting in the lobby for Mr. Ullman to get him and show him around on Closing Day, Jack is reading a Playgirl magazine. Why is he reading “that” magazine? Where did that magazine come from? If it was already in the lobby, then Why? Either way it didn’t seem to bother Jack or anyone else. Definitely an Odd little detail that seems intentional by the filmmakers and it certainly adds to the surrealism of the movie and adds to the odd behavior of Jack Torrance. I know what you mean about becoming an adult and changing your attitude about snow. I always preferred the wintertime and snowy days, until my 30s, when I took a job in construction and had to work outside, in the below freezing temps. The coldest day I ever went to work in was 6 degrees. I still love the wintertime, but what I’ve learned over these past winters, is that my favorite part of winter is going inside and getting warm. It really sucks when you’re not able to do that because of work. It takes only a few minutes for your fingers and toes to freeze, and about 10+ throbbing minutes for them to unfreeze. Ever hit your hand or fingers on something when their really cold. Yeah, I’ll take any hot summer day over that anytime. Staying inside by a warm fire in some cozy flannel pajama bottoms and a comfy shirt, is how I want to spend all Snowy or Below Freezing Days. I think I could probably handle the isolation part of the job. I used to imagine being locked in a Circuit City or Best Buy overnight, and just watching movies all night long. If the Hotel had a huge Blu-ray or DVD collection, or I was able to bring my own, I think I could make it work. As I was typing this, I got a notification that The Thing reaction just dropped. I now know what I’m about to do. The Thing is my #1 Horror film and one of my Top 10 films of All-Time. Given the similar settings and weather conditions of both films… it must have been Kismet that made me decide to watch The Shining this morning. ;-)
