This movie was the sleeper hit of 1987. Nobody thought it would do as well as it did, let alone become the classic that it is. Patrick was a classically trained dancer. His mom had a dance studio and was an instructor. Cynthia Rhodes, who played Penny was also a professional dancer. She was in Staying Alive with John Travolta. Fun fact: During the dance montage when Patrick slid his fingers past Jennifer’s armpit, she really did get ticklish and laughed a few times and when Johnny is getting annoyed, Patrick really was getting annoyed, but they thought it was funny and kept it in. When Johnny gets fired and says goodbye to Baby, he is singing the song, She’s like the Wind. They needed a song and Patrick had that song and it fit perfectly for the scene. When Johnny and Baby are doing their final dance and he jumped off the stage, he had been having issues with his knees and they couldn’t get the shot right. He said he’d try it one last time, luckily they got the shot. Patrick Swayze played Danny Zuko in the play Grease, but I’m not sure if it was on Broadway or not. I was in high school when this movie came out and all the girls started wearing those long jean shorts that came down right above the knee just like Baby.
