The word game they’re playing, Shiritori, also has another rule: the word you say has to start with the last kana of the last word. For example: Sakura -> Raigetsu -> Tsundere -> Reikan (this word loses because it ends with an n). Think of it like a word game where you say a word that starts with the last letter of the previous word. That’s why they used Merci in the translation, because the last word Ichikawa said was Emblem. It was probably the best word they could have used too, except if maybe they translated “Emblem” differently.

But I guess in the game you can only say one word. And for Japan Arigato IS one word, but thank you wouldn't fit within the bounds of the game. So they just decided to put Merci XD

However the 2 things you picked out so far (about the ninjas and the hot food) that translation actually got right. Overall the subs you're using now are much better tho, and aniwave actually *yoinked* these subtitles about 2 hours after the episode came out anyway lol.
