The lady in charge shrugged. “I guess I was judging based on your outfit.”

Shay laughed a little. “Well, I could take my shirt off like some of the guys, if you think that would be better.”

The coordinator laughed and looked around. “I think that would lead to trouble… Just be careful. I do appreciate your willingness to help out. We don’t get a lot of young women showing up by themselves. They usually come in a group.”

Shay picked up the crowbar and replied. “I don’t really belong to a group. I’m happy to help. I came for the festival.”

Shay wrangled the crowbar up the ladder and settled down on the roof. The site coordinator wasn’t the only one to give Shay a second look, but no one said anything with their mouths. Shay thought they said plenty with their eyes and expressions, but she let it go.

She could have dug out a t-shirt from her little cache of clothes she managed to carry on the motorcycle. She figured she’d need to pick up a few things if she planned to stick around until the festival ended. And that was her plan for the week.

The plan for the afternoon was to rip off a layer of planks that someone had, at some time in the past, put over a layer of shingles that were more or less nailed to rotten decking that was more or less attached to the roof joists.

Shay went to work, determined to clear the section of roof the site coordinator had asked her to tackle. She liked the idea of giving her time and effort to the job at hand. She also decided she’d call the broker who managed her trust portfolio and ask him to make a generous cash donation. She’d also leverage her dad into matching her gift. She had the means to do that, but no one needed to know. She wanted them to see her working alongside them as an equal.
