Beyond The Walls

Dr. Amir Kumar looked over the waiting area of the new Health For Humanity clinic in Jaiparhi, India. There were only a few patients to be seen at that moment, but he knew things would get hectic in a few hours.

Dr. Olivia Overmark had arrived a few days earlier. Min Arora, a nurse practitioner, had arrived a few days before her. And Vanessa Lenen, the immunologist who often worked on site with the team, would be arriving from Brazil soon. Things in the Jaiparhi clinic were coming together as the others of the team were arriving.

Outside the clinic, however, life in the streets of Jaiparhi was difficult. Min had returned from a nearby street market the day before to report that there was a merchant there whose cough was terrible. She hesitated forcing him into letting her examine him, but urged him to come to the clinic.

“It was a deep, wet, productive cough,” Min had explained to Amir. “If it’s contagious, he’s spreading whatever it is to everyone around him.”

Amir had nodded. “And in that market, there are a lot of people.”

Amir decided he would go find the man and insist he get checked out. As a doctor with a little gray in his beard, the merchant would at least be respectful.

Amir left the clinic and headed for the market. It took hardly any time for him to be surrounded by the buyers and sellers crowded onto the Jaiparhi street.

As Amir approached the merchant Min had told him about, he thought his going out of the clinic was really very much in keeping with the mission of Health For Humanity: taking healthcare to those in need.

Amir would find the man. He would be cordial and respectful. He would treat the man with dignity. And he hoped the man would let him treat his ailment in return.
