I live in Tennessee and regularly hang out in many places that are so well known for black bears appearing that they're all over the iconography of the towns. I have now at this point in my life roared to run one of them off (away from, amusingly to your comment, a barbecue with octopus on it), which might sound terrifying to a bear-less Australian!

I've lived in Perth for 33 years, and I've never seen a single snake, venomous spider, octopus or crocodile, outside of a zoo. It's comparable to the US - they have wolves, bears, snakes, alligators and mountain lions. But just like Australia, they aren't really a threat to you unless you hang out in their habitat without taking precautions.
