CIA Brain Exercise: Caliber Selection Part I
Added 2021-07-08 20:37:48 +0000 UTCHello Tier II and Tier III,
Today we're going to try something a little different. Pick which calibers you would choose to bug out on foot to a rural location.
Post your choices and reasoning in the comments below.
I'll post my choices in Part II in a few days.
Choices
22LR or 223/556?
223/556 or 9mm?
9mm or 12GA 00 Buck?
12 GA 00 Buck or 7.62x51/308?
If you could only have one, which would you choose?
Comments
1- on foot to rural environment 556/223, it is what I think is adequate for hunting and self defense at medium range, I just think it’s a little loud for a big situation. But you said wide open Land and lots of room so 223 it is. 2- I would stick with 223/556 over 9mm because of the space I think the extra stopping power is worth the noise. 3-9 mm to have the ability to hunt but get more distance and accuracy then a buck shot. 4- 7.62 for distance and shot placement 5- 7.62 stopping power. Overall 223 is what I like best 9mm close second

2023-06-10 16:33:35 +0000 UTCLate to the party but thought I’d add some thoughts. I live in the desert SW and about an hour drive away from the city already. Out here, big game shots are LONG and few and far between unless your stealthy AF…by the muleys and coues deer are too and they’re usually better. Lots of small game around like rabbit, quail/dove, etc. In the mountains due West of my property, I’ve seen pronghorn and mountain goat (more rare). If I’m bugging out, water is way more important than anything else so I need to save weight for that! Way more places to hide out here and I could see people coming from miles and miles away with just 10x binos and avoid contact…never have to get into a fight. 1) 22LR beats 5.56 for me because I could take shitloads of it for small game and still use it for self defense if I couldn’t avoid a fight. 2) 5.56 beats 9mm for me and my environment. The longer distance lethality is more useful in the desert. 3) 9mm beats 12ga 00-buck because I could carry more and have better chance of hunting smaller game without completely turning it into a pink mist. 4) 7.62 beats 12ga 00-buck because long range kill potential for larger game is way higher. Again, larger game desert hunting has to happen over greater distances. 1 pronghorn, muley, or goat could feed me and the wife for weeks in a survival situation. 5) 22LR beats 7.62 for me because I can carry way more of it and take advantage of more plentiful small game. 6) despite my answers above, overall for me would be 5.56. I wouldn’t want to stay in the desert for too long and would want a capable round to help retake my own property.

2021-10-02 23:40:28 +0000 UTC22lr even without subsonic theyre quiet. .223 just seems a more capable round for larger game. 9mm, not a gun guy but cant see a lot of uses for a .00. 7.62 again I think more versatile. For my one and only if theyre copper jacketed steel rounds in .556 then that other wise 7.62

2021-09-20 15:37:55 +0000 UTC5.56 because I know the ballistics very well and I have a ton of it. All my bugout bags are supplied with 5.56 as well.

2021-07-15 15:10:47 +0000 UTCExcellent point. I would also throw in 55 gr sp for 223 might be worth looking into in the same situation.

2021-07-14 17:01:35 +0000 UTCThat's a cool caliber. How's it work for you so far?

2021-07-14 17:00:50 +0000 UTCIf my .22 LR ammo can also be HP rounds, I’d take it. If they’re closed nose, I’ll stick with.223/5.56 for my one and only.

2021-07-14 15:48:48 +0000 UTCHonestly I’d go with .17hmr. Pistol and rifle variety with more ass behind it.

2021-07-14 01:15:42 +0000 UTC6. Over All - I select 9mm....abundantly available, like the 22 but offers the largest bandwidth for protection/stopping power in the city and country along with hunting suitability. Generally more concealable, as a pistol or AR styled platform too.

2021-07-13 16:59:02 +0000 UTC5. 7.62 vs. 22L - I select 7.62. Effective stopping power in the city with home protection and hunting in the country.
