Thank you for taking time to reply in detail. I definitely edited my comment so some things about my understanding of art wouldn’t have been obvious, as I wanted my general sentiments to be considered. If it wasn’t clear, I commented because (in the same sense you felt my comments came off as elitist) I perceived Kenya’s commentary on Kendrick Lamar’s performance as dismissive. I always look forward to this Patreon because of the comprehensive analysis I have grown to love, and I based my opinion on Kenya’s seemingly lack of interest from the start—which I found somewhat surprising and disappointing. I also felt she took a more biased and defensive approach since her stance was leaning towards people who don’t credit Beyonce enough for her art/genius but give Kendrick Lamar praise in that area. I would expect most of Kenya’s Patreon audience do not fit into this category. At least not from the engagements in which I’ve been an active participant. So, whilst her her points were clear and absolutely valid, I think she was “preaching to the choir” and hoped she would still give this halftime show the time of day—in spite of it all. For the record, I’m a former dancer, so everything you stated about ballet are things I’m well aware of and I agree (I’ve performed + choreographed ballet and other dance disciplines to a full range of musical genres), however, I used ballet and classical music specifically because the average person who doesn’t have any interest in either, usually has a particular idea that comes to mind (very traditional) when these specific styles are brought up. In which case, it’s easy for them to dismiss them as boring. Your points actually support what I was implying: that when given a chance to watch/listen with intention, you’re going to receive things through more open lenses. Is it possible that you’ll still find yourself bored? Absolutely. But(!) you’ll at least be able to take everything into account. Regarding the comparison, I definitely meant the way in which Beyonce and Kendrick Lamar get their messages across will be so different that rather than compare let’s just appreciate both. Again, I understand Kenya was focusing more on the contrasting responses she’s witnessed, but my point still stands in general. Lastly, no offense taken, as I anticipated the non-American comment. I get it, and understand when people tell others to mind their own business, but I also have Americans who appreciate the outside perspectives. The reality is that the US affects some other countries so severely that we have no choice but to pay attention. Maybe someone in Japan isn’t affected but people like me are. I live in Bermuda, and although we’re still a British Overseas territory, we are strongly tied to the US. One example is that your dollar affects my dollar (they’re at par). We have to import most of our food and commodities from the US. We’re geographically close and since I’m surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, I have no choice but to travel to the US if not going directly to Europe. As an unambiguously Black woman, my nationality doesn’t exempt me from many things once I hit US soil. I actually was fighting online for people to vote for Kamala Harris because I do care. I’m the type of person who doesn’t wait until problems are on my doorstep before I give a damn. For instance, as a straight person I make sure I go hard for lgbtq+ rights here because we have antiquated laws that need to change. I’ve protested and marched in the streets, I’ve dragged people to the voting booth to vote for same sex marriage. Coincidentally, our election is in four days and I’ve been speaking to my constituent’s MP for months—even before this last minute election announcement. My cousin is an MP and I stay asking her questions to see what she can do on her end. I’m very passionate (a bit too much), so there’s a reason she’s in parliament and not I. lol I wasn’t planning on typing so much but I’m trying to communicate more effectively. Thank you if you’ve gotten this far.

carly gill

Apparently DeVonta Smith is first player drafted from Alabama to score in a Super Bowl! Jalen obviously scored too, but his doesn’t count because he was drafted from Oklahoma.

I agree that it’s difficult to take Kenya seriously when she didn’t fully watch the performance and I personally thought Kendrick’s performance was great, but this take comes off a little elitist to me. People can find art with a message boring. Calling something boring speaks to the entertainment value, not the merit of the art. We all have different tastes and that doesn’t necessarily speak to our ability to understand deeper messages. And not all art is built the same. You can dance ballet to any beat you want to and sometimes it’s just meant to look beautiful rather than tell a story (this is nitpicking, but practically all dance forms are performed to a beat. Very few aren’t and ballet is not one of them. And ballet is a style of dance, not music. You can dance ballet to a Kendrick song or a metal song and it’s still ballet). Sometimes, a classical piece features an electric guitar or 808 because they sound cool. Sometimes the nuance of a story is shown through sex. Art is varied and multi-faceted. There is no one specific way to present it that is more valuable and every person is going to have a unique interpretation and experience interacting with the art. And that is a good thing. To speak on Beyoncé, Kenya was only comparing the two because many of the same people who couldn’t look deeper into Beyoncé’s use of American iconography had no problem doing so for Kendrick. Beyoncé is a pop star on a different level than an other pop star, so why can’t people see that she can have a deeper meaning to the imagery she uses but they can for Kendrick? And I’m not sure what them being in two different genres has to do with comparing the two as Black American artists using American imagery, unless you’re discussing how being in two different genres affects how they get their message across. Also, no offense but I’m getting really tired of non-Americans claiming they care more about the US than it’s actual citizens. Because it’s rarely actually true and usually just virtue signaling. Are you currently living in the US? Are you here protesting? Are you calling representatives? Are you donating to grassroots organizations? Donating to food banks? Helping organize community gardening? Are you connecting people with immigration lawyers? Are you setting up a support system for people being deported? Are you fighting nazis in the street? Did you Americans to vote against Donald Trump even if they don’t like Kamala Harris? These are all things Americans are doing right now to help ourselves and each other. If you can’t answer yes to at least two of those questions, you do not care more about the future of America than actual Americans. Even Trump supporters care about this country and its future. They’re just tragically misinformed about what the actual problems and solutions are and/or racist.

Adelle

Idk about him with football but he really has that I'm-glad-my-girl-white-and-my-kids-light stench to him and it makes me ITCH.

Lilac S.

I actually think Kendrick not doing theatrics was his intention, and not to be that person but like...yes Beyoncé gave phenomenal Super Bowl performances, BUT (at least dating back to her Black Panthers themed one) they were from a very different time. It was much easier to sell black revolution back then. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that if anything, I suspect even Bey knows the temperature is different now considering both she and Kendrick have gone from "Freedom" to "America Has A Problem." In 2016 we would have gotten the Kendrick set list you described, but in 2025, with A White Supremacist President and a bunch of Maga folk in the audience (and on Twitter), including "Alright" would have sent an almost dated message. My take is Kendrick wanted to put black imagery first and entertainment second. He literally stated at the top of the performance, "—you picked the right time but the wrong guy." Now with the sound quality being ASS, that's what messed up the performance for real...cause it's literally rap. As for Not Like Us, I'm tired of the song too and personally didn't need it, buuuuuuut stepping outside myself it makes sense. My guess is Kendrick including that song was more of a full circle/final blow in the beef type thing...considering Drake and Cole said they were big as the Super Bowl in the first place. All in all, it wasn't my favorite halftime show by far, so I won't act like it was, but his approach wasn't surprising.

Lilac S.

Me regurgitating the same things you’re saying cause I ain’t got there yet 💀

Alissa Jadyn

I also think him doing the Pop Out to prove a point that “he is the culture” may have tainted his halftime performance because he performed everyyyything there so no one would’ve been gagged at the songs. But if he’s as good of a performer as he can be… he could’ve gave us a whole new rendition. Beyoncé can do it flawlessly. But then again THATS BEY. The standards are the same for everyone else

Alissa Jadyn

I’m so sick of the Kendrick/Drake beef 😭 like everything Kendrick does gets dissected to figure out how he’s dissing Drake and I’m tiredddd. And unfortunately for Kendrick it’s gonna take years to separate himself from this and people won’t be able to look at his work from a different lense. (Also, like you said, I think people are just not smart. So it’s easy to be fake smart when “pointing out” the ways Kendrick is “subliminally dissing” Drake. And they be REACHES

Alissa Jadyn

Why does black magic always get connected to african spirituality:/ first time i understood a football rant after the game clips last night

Christina Oghagbon

I appreciate it what it does for the city, but agree with every single criticism.

Chris

You should do more sports talk!! I’d love to hear your takes on wnba and college wbb stuff

Trinelle

I would divorce my white husband, we already had that talk when we were dating lol

Marissa Pindel

begging more sports talk tho, the girlies need it

joi

PLS not too much on lamar, he started off rough in that bills game but he def pulled himself together by the end. it’s fuck ass mark andrews that can’t hold onto the damn ball.

joi

Kendrick’s performance was ok but it didn’t feel like a Super Bowl performance. I’m so irritated how everyone’s choosing to be intellectual with his show but when it’s Beyoncé… everybody either deifies her or assumes the absolute worst of her! There’s no middle ground to just have real conversation about her art, like with Kendrick. I’m over it

Danielle

Tom Brady gave up his family for this shit

THANK GOD AND THE EAGLES BEAT THEM BY A LANDSLIDE

I got a co-worker that's a Beyonce hater and she justifies it by saying she hates Jay-Z so Bey is collateral damage. It's so looney and small minded. Why should women be punshied for their husband's faults. This performance better be the end of the book. I can't hear that song one more time. We get it. He's been wicked. The performance was a bit boring.

B.Darling

I agree with you on Kendrick‘s SB Performance — give us the Hits from your Discography, not all these B sides. ALRIGHT should have been on the setlist, I was waiting for it Pepsi had better halftime shows

Snazzy Jazzy

I see a white man when i see Mahomes. His white wife and his white kids and his white mamma. Too close to white to be Black. There are rules in this house lol.

B.Darling

oh by the way we need a new cowboy carter ranking before you see her live! maybe revisit the fanmade ranking from last year bc that was funny and compare it to your current one, if your list has changed since? it’s a need kenya it’s not just a want!!

risa kim

you fully articulated why i cannot STAND Saquon I thought it was just me!!

I actually loved the superbowl performance lol, i was thoroughly amused

DariaanMichelle

Kenya you are probably the only person i subscribe to that can make me listen to sports

loveme4me

They’re talking about Kendrick’s performance like it’s championing the crucifixion of pedophiles, it’s speaking up against pedophilia…. ITS JUST ABOUT HATING DRAKE. MY GOD. And that pedo thing is just ammo against the Canadian. People are obsessed with fanfare obsessed with mess they make it out to be something deeper when they just like mess

Danielle A

Kenya, how are you telling us that you kinda sorta watched the halftime show and for us to not think your take is unserious? 😩 I completely disagree with the B Side take and Kendrick Lamar’s performance being boring. Since this perspective spent a lot of time focusing on Beyoncé, I couldn’t help but think that Beyonce actually does have to put on a spectacle. That’s what we have come to expect. But, even regarding the Americana references, there really isn’t a need to compare because this was a rapper who is on a different level than any other rapper. Beyoncé is a pop star. THEE pop star. Nothing to do with Kendrick Lamar. He did it in his genre. Kendrick Lamar took the stage to portray how Rap really is poetry when done right. I love that he crafted this set list with the pure intention of telling a story for ONLY BLACK AMERICANS. The message was the focus. This wasn’t for any white person’s entertainment. It’s actually infuriating to me that literal African Americans have fixed their mouths to call that performance “boring”(?!). You lot sound like people who call ballet boring because they can’t open their minds to appreciate that not every dance has to be performed to a beat. Do you have a favourite classical music composition that takes your spirit to another place? Have you watched a series that was so beautifully written with nuanced characters that it’s a slow burn, but so fucking interesting that you realise you don’t need stunts, sex, or any other OTT antics? Like goddamn Jesus fucking Christ people. Kendrick Lamar chose songs that perfectly fit each chapter of the message to his target audience— 🫵🏾 YOU!!!! And you all just wanted a spectacle and to bop along to his most popular songs?! Why would he perform “Alright” when 1. He already performed that during the Dr. Dre Superbowl, and 2. You lot in the US of A are NOT ALRIGHT! Not in this current state of affairs under this Nazi administration. I am not even a Kendrick Lamar fan—I knew like 3 of those songs— but THAT was the point. He wasn’t gonna be another nigga running around for the sake of simple entertainment. NFL has that built into their brand.💅🏽 He had a Black American story to tell. If you went in with an open, unbiased mindset, and gave your undivided attention, there’s no way that you left that proverbial theatre unmoved and with nothing to digest. But honestly, just ignore me because the way I’ve been feeling like I give more of a shit about the future of Black America than actual Americans; and how complacent and docile the collective has become…it’s making me spiral at this point. Like I’m questioning my own sanity.

carly gill

I turned off the halftime show a couple minutes in baby. I’m all for Drake lashings but SNOOZE fest no SZA.

Keith Primas

The CC album cover is cunt. That’s my academic critique.

Keith Primas

Girl I would have NEVER guessed Patriots fan for you omg 😭😭 but then again my ass just started watching football this season lmao

Stephanie Feagin

My mind: *sees title* "No One Mourns the Wicked" "GOOD NEWWWWWWS"

Jay Jay

I've been saying that Kendrick is a student of Beyonce as he should be! More people should get into it!

Birdie Wolf

I remember arguing back in 2017-2018 with my (white) roommate and he was saying how Beyoncé is just a capitalist and using blackness (this was just after lemonade and her super bowl performance) as just a way to pander to people and make money. He then named some random white band as a "good" example of artists having political messages in their work and "really meaning it." I had to ask him over and over why he thinks Beyoncé is just pandering and mindlessly using blackness, while his example is supposedly so fucking genuine. Needless to say, his reasoning basically boiled down to "because i said so." From there, i decided to stop having discourse with non-black people about black work and even not really reading reviews from white critics, specifically for works from black women. They just REFUSE to believe that a black woman can produce work that has any substance. Hearing non-black people's thoughts on Renaissance and Cowboy Carter just further proved it. Edit: oh i got to the point in the video and hearing you the same about white people talking about black work!

Davonte

Only redeeming moment of Kendrick halftime is Serena getting her lick back 🙂‍↕️ Drake don't make that face

Alexandria U

Your thoughts on black people with white partners is the reason I know I could never date a white person. Like, i have really bad trust issues when it comes to stuff about race and racism, so I couldn't risk my most intimate relationship being ruined because my partner said the n-word.

Alexandria U

this is off topic but i mixed my cecred with my olaplex purple shampoo/conditioner and i thought of u.... also my hair smells amazing

aiyonna

I think this is a good question that I wouldn't know the full answer to. But, I will say to add to your comment, the performer holding up the Palestinian/Sudan flag and then being immediately pulled off stage, instead of being protected by Kendrick's team, does add some nuance. Because let's say Kendrick's team let that guy stay, it would have been really provocative part in the performance. But they didn't... so the performance of Americana did sorta become shallow in my eyes, personally.

Alexandria U

i need your thoughts after the beyhive presale tmrw 😭

Kenya Moore

it's rlly annoying how no nuance is given to Beyonce's usage of the American flag in her art vs how charitably ppl will view Kendrick's usage of it during the halftime show. some ppl just think that bc something has the flag on it, that the artist is supporting patriotism or American exceptionalism. if those critics just listen to "American requiem" or "ya ya," they'd see that Beyonce's not *enthusiastic* about American history as she relates to it, but it's still a part of her nonetheless. I looked up why Outkast and Sly and the Family Stone used the flag on their covers and it wasn't pure patriotism, so why can't Bey get the same grace??? I think another factor that plays a role is that Kendrick has always been a "conscious" rapper (even while making stuff that was meant to be more commercial) while out-of-touch ppl still think Beyonce makes vapid pop songs like "halo" or "single ladies," so beyond plain old misogyny, Beyonce is never given the benefit of the doubt bc she wasn't always a "serious" artist who could carry a larger message like critiquing the United States (I'm sure there's more someone else could add, but this is off the dome)

rudi!!!

on behalf of my city, i know we have the worst fans but it’s what brings us together. sorry to everyone on the outside, still love you guys ♥️ we are closing the schools friday for the parade and some schools had 2 hr delays today. so basically it’s integrated into our community from a very young age to root for our home teams 😂

tay w

speaking as a Ravens fan (bc I'm from MD), by the time the Ravens got eliminated this season, I was just rooting for anyone to take the chiefs out, including the fcking bills 😭😭😭 idk all the stats or players' names, but I just hate the chiefs' vibes??? Patrick Mahomes and his whole family being maga down (plus his r*pist brother, allegedly???), Travis Kelce's codeswitching in and out of Blackness, him intersecting swifties w/ football stan twt (two of the worst sectors of that website) - between all that, I just needed them GONE. FLY EAGLES FLYYYY (until next season) 🦅🦅🦅

rudi!!!

I liked Kenny's superbowl performance. I think it was above average from the ones that I've seen at least. Like I do not care about the Halftime show. Like I didn't even watch Usher's halftime show last year. I only tuned in to see Rihanna because she's been on hiatus. And then I think before that the last one after 2017 (gaga) I tuned in for was the Shakira and JLo performance. If Beyonce's not showing up I don't really care about it. Growing up the Superbowl was about the commercials until Beyonce stepped on that stage. I watched after that thinking that's what it means to do the Superbowl. It wasn't. She was just in different eras.

Birdie Wolf

Lmaooooo Kenya 😭😂😭😂

Dejavu

I kid you not, I heard my ex husband say the n word while playing the game. I’m an no longer married thank god because fuck that😂 His dumbass sitting there talking about how his Mexican friends be saying it like wtf 🤨 so, any black person who sits there and allows that bullshit to take place is a fucking weirdo. Also, side note I watched challengers for the first time last night and it pissed me clean off. Just had to get that off my chest.

Dejanais White

Same lol. Literally mostly here for the EPIC Kendrick performance!! Idek who did the national anthem.

emily

Should not have been whether or not it is propaganda, but how is it being used. Can propaganda used by black artists override nationalist propaganda that the NFL continuously upheld?

Serena

Oh dont get me started on josh allen and his pity award

emily

Performers at the NFL are going to be propaganda anyway because of U.S. imperialism. No matter what symbols are used. The discourse surrounding it has people who are intellectual lazy.

Serena

fuck Patrick too!!! the game was so embarrassing. they kept zooming in to them being upset and the way i laughed!! this was my first time watching the game being a football fan, and I'm mad that we got such a mid game. I was bored by the halftime. the chiefs didn't wanna win lmao.

Last year’s Beyonce narrative was that she’s releasing products because she’s broke. This year’s is that she’s a propagandist. These people never tire of their “critiques” but are also tuned in for every damn thing she does.

Sabrina C

i’m glad you said it kenya. i’m lowkey a kendrick stan but i was bored by the performance as well. like he shoulda left that performance for the tour! this is the SUPER BOWL! and yes yes yes, i understand that he had another agenda in mind. but can’t he get his point across and still be entertaining? (please don’t tell me i’m missing the point, i know what the point of ‘uncle sam’ was and how we all just wanna be entertained and ignore the real issues of the world and blah blah blah, but beyonce can do both at the same fucking time. but maybe it’s my fault for comparing the two and i should stop comparing everybody to the industry standard.)

Imani Branch

That man has the sorriest oline and defense in the league! Idk if I've ever seen him crack like Mahomes did with that kind of pressure.

1.Jalen winning means that his all women team won and that makes me happy. 2. I’m glad Serena got to dance on Drake’s grave 3. Patrick Mahomes looked goofy as hell in that Eagle green suit AND THAT’S WHAT HE GETS 4. Roll Tide
