Cynthia is definitely the star of this movie, I loved how she portrayed the character. Throughout the whole movie I I couldn't stop thinking how beautiful she sounded and looked. She deserves all the praise and recognition

I told my sister the exact same thing during the movie 🎶The wizard and I🎶 she sounded timid and unsure of herself in the beginning and towards the end during the crescendo you can tell she gains her independence and confidence. 2024-12-10 17:03:35 +0000 UTCOof there are a few things 😅 I’m not sure of you heard about the controversy with the edited Wicked poster (a fan edited a poster and Cynthia said it made her feel like her identity was erased). People really didn’t like that, especially because the fan got doxxed, but she did apologize and I think it was overblown in the first place. It was a case of people not understanding how difficult it can be to be a Black woman in the spotlight and that sometimes human beings react badly under pressure. The oldest incident was when she was cast in Harriet and people found out that she’d been talking down on Black Americans on Twitter. People were already feeling iffy because Harriet was being played by someone who wasn’t Black American, so finding all that out didn’t help. And then while Cynthia did a great job acting in Harriet, it ended up being a White savior movie more than a true depiction of Harriet Tubman’s life. Some people also say she homewrecked Lena Waithe’s marriage, but I don’t know much about that so I take it with a grain of salt. There was also some controversy in the theater world about her getting a show killed for a “fake racist controversy” but I don’t know much about it and it was mostly White people complaining so I take that one with a grain of salt too. I do think she gets too much hate though, especially with all the actually terrible people there are in Hollywood.

I know there's discussions going around bc Eugenio Derbez (a Mexican darling - aka my second dad) criticized her, and he was justified. I *get* she was supposed to be an American living in Mx, so of course she was going to have an accent. But, at times, it didn't even seem like she knew what she was saying. Zoe and Karla Sofia were the standouts.

Definitely not concerned for Jay-Z either way. Overall, I just feel grossed out by the general public’s gluttonous response to all these disturbing reports as of late. I’ve become considerably less interested in following and watching anything “true crime” related now because I can’t help but feel icky about joining in on the consumption of sensationalizing real people’s trauma. I don’t know if that makes sense, but it feels reminiscent of early 2000s guttersnipe behaviour (i.e. the way “we” treated Britney Spears during her public breakdown era). Like, okay we didn’t know any better because we were all ignorant then, but what about now? Why are we getting off on the idea of sex crimes? Ugh
