....like don't piss me off it's not very christmas spirit of you

Beyonce is greatest Pop star of 21 century because....DUH

Comments

I wish you put this on the main channel because I hate how people don’t give Beyoncé credit the way she deserves. It makes me sooooo mad lol

Farhana

Beyoncé definitely deserves to be number one period like she says in Alien Superstar

Issa Smith

i knew we were losing recipes when i had someone quote beyoncé to me VERBATIM (about no one making albums anymore) and when i finished the quote she had no idea what i was talking about!!! and i was with a group of people and no one knew that was a beyoncé original

aiyonna

You need to release this video to Youtube. Everyone gotta educate themselves about Beyonce. You said it beautifully!!!

S. R

i agree with most of the list and you’re so right about the fact that no one wants to define what a popstar is. however, imo i would move Rihanna down to #5 and put Kanye #3 and Nicki #4. Now i love rihanna but i would move her down simply for a shorter career (2005-2017). as annoying as nicki can be her impact on the rap and pop girls is huge. in the same way all the new pop girlies cannot exist without bey and even taylor 🙄, i dont think any of the rap girls could be doing what they are w/o nicki. kanye gets to keep #3 tho for the cultural impact of 808s alone lol.

emiliaem

Taylor Swift is on stage in a leotard, WHY! 🤣

Kendall

i had to stop engaging with the beyonce haters. they are so deranged

Rihab

I haven’t seen the list but OF COURSE Beyoncé is the greatest pop star of the 21st century!! OF COURSE SHE IS!! She is and forever will be. And I’m a Taylor Swift super fan as well. Beyonce has always given her all on stage. On every stage. Taylor wasn’t a performer back in the day (think 2005-2014) but she took this Eras Tour and fine tune herself on stage. She’s definitely gotten a lot better. But BEYONCÉ BEEN THAT GIRL FOR DECADES!! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾

Dani

Rosalia mention ikdr!! You can’t have a Sabrina without Ariana, either lol But yes facts on everything you said. That’s why I pay pure Swifties dust, it’s delusional.

Katorah Thomas

Like the fact that ever since 2004, any new pop or RnB girl that came out, all the tabloids were like "move over Beyonce, ___ is in town" like they've been trying to knock the queen down a peg for 20 YEARS!!! She's always been that girl!! And Beyonce has multiple successful tours and never had to tour for a full year to get her numbers up. Like please!!!

Angelique

At most you could say Bey went back to the woods during Black is King or even with CC but even then, both of those albums are so impactful and such a reinvention (but also an extension) of her brand that it never felt like she *HAD* to do it to get attention. Really both of those genres of those albums directly benefited from Beyonce dipping her toe in those sounds. No one was taking the shift to country music seriously until Beyonce, and now everybody wanna have songs with twang and wear their cowboy hats. Hell I'm literally from Nashville and didn't get a cowboy hat till Beyonce did CC. She may go into the woods but it's definitely not gonna be to tap into something that's already been done

Angelique

Grossed a billion dollars on tour*

anuschilis

YOOOO I felt like I was the only one who noticed when that announcement that she had grossed a billion dollars on your earning more than Beyoncé suddenly she was everywhere? Like not that everyone loved and was talking about her but she was being forced fed to me in EVERY new outlet there is and in each and everyone except the ones about her dating life mentioned Beyoncé She already gets suspected of dropping variation of her album when another pop girl is about to hit number one but I’ve been saying since 3 years ago? That she’s invested in HEAVY media play

anuschilis

Beyoncé’s impact is so crazy that they kind of ripped off renaissance for smile 2

Olivia

Everything you said is the best example of why I HAATTEEEE when people say Beyoncé is “overrated.” Cause baby where the fuck have you been the past two DECADES?

Stephanie Feagin

I need a whole video on the Taylor swift renaissance starting in like 2021

Jill

SPEAK ON IT!!

aliya

Kenya please talk about this DoorDash discourse!!

Taylor Haynes

We need Top 25 Popstars of All Time (Kenya's Version)

Bryce Ancil

“Beyonce never had to go to the woods” 😂😭

Shav

Why did I get such good sleep replaying this last night

Momo

I think about that day & when it comes I am calling out of whatever I’m obligated to for a week, and that’s being generous

Momo

I went through hell to resubscribe just to watch this.

Jelissa

Great video Kenya, always on the right side of history

TemTem

Adding onto what kenya said in the video, even the legends have given beyonce that acknowledgement and that passing of the torch. They acknowledge her talent and skill and they trusted their legacies will be safe in her hands and it was/is all the while being a black mother. Also bey has changed what day her peers and those who came after release their music on, the impact is visible

loveme4me

You see that with those years vmas and subsequent award show performances. Most of the PERFORMERS who have yonce-isms don’t even attend. IE: Doja doechii victoria monet charli chappell even megan. You see performers absence bc everyone is sitting on their laurels

loveme4me

In all seriousness, not to be morbid AT ALL but when Beyoncé passes on, there's no doubt in my mind that it's going to be felt on an extreme global scale. It shouldn't take that happening for people to get it of course, but the amount everyone will remember will be undeniable. I feel like she's the last of her kind to have that kind of magnitude. She's just one of those cultural staples that's already crossing full generations like how our parents shared their greats with us, AND SHE'S NOT EVEN A PAST ACT. To me, that makes her Number 1 by default.

Lilac S.

Not to be mean but the closest thing I can think of is her SNL monologue- 💀

Lilac S.

The most culturally impactful things I think Taylor has done is rerecord her previous work and turning them into celebrations of her career, and also showing the shift from country to pop. HOWEVER, Beyoncé has done way more things for culture like you said Kenya. Also artists like Tina Turner showed us how you can completely change your genre and still be successful. Taylor could’ve been top 15 (prob at number 15 lol) but nowhere near top 5 imo. It’s funny how now we look at Taylor and she’s well liked and getting called a pop star, when she’s an anti-pop star. If she wants to be considered the best of pop, she gotta let go of Jack Antonoff before we let her in the top 5. It’s been very lana del rey coded for the last few albums…

aj◇

two thoughts on miley cyrus: 1) the disney/nick girls being able to quickly shed their family friendly image & become these “pop sensations” should be thanking miley bc she went through hell 2) miley should be higher on the list just off the fact that both her & hannah montana had crazy discographies, sales, eras, etc

Kenya Moore

and gaga is not niche at all but she has had 10x the impact than all the other people you mentioned!

kristiana

lady gaga goes toe to toe in many areas with beyonce. the monster ball, the born this way ball and artrave were HUGE tours in the 2010s

kristiana

When I tell you the first time I listen to doechii’s yucky blucky fruit cake and heard that second verse… chills. I went down a doechii rabbit hole and it’s crazy how even in her earliest days she was still so visionary. She has ALWAYS been sooo incredibly versatile in her style, music, dance, etc… I KNOW doechii will be someone people look back to in awe (even now honestly).

minnalove

It also irritated how much the article kept referring to why Taylor was #2 and Beyoncé was #1 continuously mentioning oh but Taylor’s younger so you know it’s hard when Beyoncé dominated the whole 25 years. Just stop. I want to read WHY Beyoncé won not why someone else didn’t. Everything you said about B being the blueprint, with the production, the mic on, the dancing, the stage, the outfits is what that article should’ve been discussing instead.

Chloé

It annoyed me seeing people make it about numbers and sales again, just ignoring the whole idea of POP STAR. I just don’t get why swift fans are so desperate to try to dethrone Beyoncé. They act like they’re the music executives pulling out these sales numbers like who cares🤣in 25 years no one is gonna care how many albums they sold. It is about cultural impact, and iconic Beyoncé performances will simply be replayed forever, because her stardom is just something that you KNOW is unparalleled when you see it.

Chloé

So glad you are taking about this. People don’t know what a popstar is anymore

Valerie

It really really irks me when people try to put T Swift on the same or even at a higher level than Beyoncé as a popstar. Not only is it disrespectful to Beyoncé but also to many other stars who have laid down bricks to what it means to be a popstar in the 21st century. I fully agree with about everything you said Kenya, though I think Lady Gaga does deserve a footnote when it comes to defining stage performance in the late 00s/ 10s. Miss Gaga took notes from Beyoncé as well obviously, but there is something to be said about the way Gaga embraced drama, theatre and camp from her very debut and the explosion of camp popstar fashion and stage production in the early 10s.

Raoul Christian Carlos

Obviously Beyoncé is operating on a different level of performance and showmanship than the other stars on the list, but I think it’s unfair to say that Taylor swift is a “bad performer” when comparing her to Beyoncé. Even though Taylor isn’t giving choreo and powerhouse vocals like some of the other girls on the list, I think it’s become evident especially with the eras tour that Taylor has grown to be very confident and charismatic on the stage. She knows what works for her and the way she carries herself on stage obviously draws people in, if not the tour wouldn’t be such a cultural moment. And something that none of the other pop stars in the top 5 can say besides Taylor and Gaga is that they can still carry a performance on stage with just them and a piano or guitar and still hold people attention. I think we need to give appreciation to this type of talent and performance as well.

Augustin Chincarini

taylor beating out Rihanna, Britney Spears, Lady GaGa, Justin Bieber, and more in a greatest 21st century popstar competition was already unbelievable. The fact that swifties thought she should’ve won over Beyonce in addition is lowkey scary. It has to be a mental illness

Jayden Brown

I would say Sabrina Carpenter. She popstars in such a fun way and her team have done an excellent job at crafting her image.

Dynasty Andrews

As someone who went to Taylor’s Eras tour back in October, 90% of her stage performance are the props and the special effects. Taylor dances exactly the way you think a white girl would dance, and I don’t know how to explain that statement…

Dynasty Andrews

The mere idea that she isn't, its disrespectful at its very LEAST! What are people even talking about?

Kyora Wallace

yesss pop pantheon shout out to top off another amazing video 🩷

momo

Who are the runner ups?? Like?? Beyonce is still here after almost 30 years. She deserves it.

Gabriel Benton

i was with you all the way until the Rosalia comment lmao. she's never sat right with me

Abbie Nuñez

BTS do Taylor swift numbers too

Mycah

Maybe we need a video of Kenya’s list of top 15 Pop Stars of the 21st Century! 😀 Also you’re the second person I follow who’s suggested the Pop Pantheon podcast, I might have to see what they’re giving

Jai_1

Rosalia praise 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️

Lavender1495

I could listen to you talk about Beyonce all day because YOU JUST GET ITTT

Ramone Paris

Yea i always try to think of one of her iconic performances and draw a blank

Heidi Diaz

And if I said SZA shoulda been on that list then what

Keith Primas

Ughh I miss the Renaissance Tour Era BAD. It was so much fun getting on Twitter and looking at the outfits and clips from each city. 😫😫

Keith Primas

Heavy on no one gaf about Taylor in 2019😭 crazy how different things are now

Trinity Miller

not to mention, the fact that beyonce was the first artist to have an unspoken dress code to her tour for renaissance. now other fans are doing that to their fav artist such as a nicki minaj. i’m glad you mentioned the fact about her starting outfit changes after every concert beginning with renaissance. when break my soul came out, people had so many think pieces about other artists following in beyonce shoes and thought a lot of artist were about to come out with house music. beyonce dropped cowboy carter and now you got bet highlighting black country artists on their award shows as well as other platforms doing the same. and this is all RECENT. let’s not get into a rabbit hole on what was & what has & what’s she’s been doing. chyyy

Tyy Li

I thought the discourse would be with gaga fans but Taylor swift is so unserious.

Eboni Haynes

So happy to hear some Madonna love. I’ve become a major fan in the past year and despite one of the longest, most successful female pop careers I feel like she gets treated as a second thought. AND her and Beyonce love each other. Not many can say that…. If yall want to hear some reallll music, you’ll visit her 90’s to early 2000’s album run. Erotica to Confessions on a Dance Floor. WOAH… fun, sonically advanced, and a great history lesson! Thanks for vlogmas again Kenya!! 🫶🏿🩷

Favour

I tried thinking of a truly iconic TS performance and I couldnt think of any. Britney has her VMA performances, Lady Gaga has her iconic Paparazzi VMA performance, but Taylor? 😶

Matthew

Seeing people shocked pissed me off like who tf are y’all playing with. Of course it’s Beyoncé are you dumb??

Gabriella

The biggest thing i take away from this conversation is, as you mentioned in a previous video, conversations around music have become so miserable because everyone is a stan, a hater, or just has their own agenda in general. Beyoncé doesn't need to be someone's #1 artist for it to be an objective truth that her impact is beyond comparison. It is what it is and the fact that there is a debate over her spot proves how deep in the sunken place we are. Tbh i don't think most people are equipped to talk critically about music like this because they lack the history/context and have so many things (eg misogyny and racism) working on them. I want to say that people hate admitting that their fav takes ideas from their favs because idk maybe they think it makes their fav less legit. But that's not even true!! Literally no one bats an eye if someone points out influences of the Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, U2, ACDC, etc.. in major artists of today. Hell, every male pop star since the 90s have been eating off of Michael Jackson LOUDLY. But when it comes to Beyoncé, everything is up for debate and goes under a magnifying glass. People reach down the block and up they ass to give someone credit if they think another artist's music was influenced by them. Yet ironically, her impact is as big (if not bigger) than the legends before her and suddenly, every modern artist is so goddamn original and the first to do something. I think honestly that music would be in much better shape if people were less weird. Do you know how many more interesting convos could be had if people didn't spend all goddamn day debating what Beyoncé is and isn't, who's streaming numbers look like what and actually STUDIED her and how she crafted her career, and focused on how other people can move their own artisty forward. It's also kinda annoying because the real gag is everyone's too busy looking at Beyoncé's homework, but not actually focusing on what they're strength is and how they can carve out their own lane. Not everybody NEEDS to be a Beyoncé and follow her blueprint because most people are not good at it and look crazy while doing it (see: Taylor in a leotard). No one person should have all that power and it does open a conversation as to how even Beyoncé still has to carry the weight of the world on her shoulders and teach the new girls how to do things properly. Because if she's not doing it, then who else will? It's a testament to her talent and work ethic, yes, but that amount of pressure is unprecedented for a music artist. Not that i think she will cave into the pressure, but it's just kinda sad that she's been given all this responsibilty just for being so damn good. People are gonna except her to do literal magic for the rest of her life.

Davonte

ofc Beyonce would be #1 just bc she literally changed the day of the week music companies release albums. the literal reason we have new music Friday instead of new music Tuesday like we used to is bc of self-titled in 2013!!! beyond all the other metrics, no other artist has that level of impact and no other artist will!!! 🙂‍↕️

rudi!!!

I had turn on my VPN to see it but the link works. I’m in Germany so I thought it was a us thing.

Alivia

One of ur best videos to date, like sometimes I put on ur pod and thing that these are the good days because ik that one day we’re just gonna get old and serious and you’ll leave us behind 😭😭

Taylor Haynes

Hearing you preach about Beyoncé 😭🙏🏽 cuz people don’t understand what this woman has done and achieved

Lavender1495

Taylor probably wouldn’t make it in the top ten if the list was at all serious. But it’s not. Taylor is a jack of all trades and a master of none. The only thing she’s mastered is capitalism. She’s really good at the commercial aspect of pop stardom. But money doesn’t mean anything to me. That’s not how I judge pop stars.

Birdie Wolf

Kelly Clarkson shoulda been on the list

Saadiah McIntosh

I’m a big Janet Jackson fan and like alittle of Beyoncé but she deserves it , this woman right here has made an empire in this millennium congrats Beyoncé !!!💖

Sarah Uwagbai

Well, that’s the thing. Is Taylor a mediocre artist or is she a mediocre popstar? I would argue it’s more of the second than the first. Taylor can be/is a great artist, but I agree that as a popstar, she’s not that integral to the pop stratosphere. We give it to her cause she’s wildly successful but a lot of Taylor’s selling point is almost anti-popstar and goes against the mystique of it unlike Brit, Bey, Rih and Gaga. It’s an interesting conversation to be had.

Eric

Yeah, we can look back and see that Miley took a lot of hits to the chest, just for them to now to be an unquestioned standard. This is why I doubt Taylor makes the top 10 in my list. There are folks they spilled blood into this game to push things forward, and hasn’t done enough…

Birdie Wolf

plsss do your top 10!!!

Bones of a Carrot

I wonder if it’s because some people still struggle to consider her a popstar in general. The industry also doesn’t seem to necessarily like Lana Del Rey at least from what we’ve heard behind the scenes. I’ll never forget when one one of the men on the Grammy voting committee said that he will never give Lana Del Rey his vote for a grammy after her butchered SNL performance and to this day he has never been able to take her seriously. It’s strange because she ushered in a new era of pop music for these new girls in terms of that sad melancholic dreamy type sound everyone seems to be obsessed with right now. She has a whole bunch of mini mes trying to replicate her sound even taylor swift obviously tried to channel it with her tortured poets album. She deserves her flowers as well and it’s not just my fan bias showing 🤭 , but just objectively speaking . I think people also won’t give her flowers until she’s long gone. She’s kind of starting to gain a lot more respect now, she certainly had a big 2023 and 2024, though a decade into her career , but It’s not all the way there yet. Her peers love her , she’s constantly praised by her fellow musicians , of course the fans love her, but it seems like the industry itself or the “powers that be” still have not fully gotten behind her.

T_Maureen_I

lol the half bald look was Cassie’s influence actually. But Rihanna DEFINITELY had people doing all types of hair foolishness, myself included. I wanted both the Good Girl Gone Bad bob AND the Rated R tapered cut. And like you said, point me to an artist that can do that now? Also this current set of girlies are afraid to experiment. They want to give you edgy, but they too afraid to pull out the scissors or the clippers. Nobody’s pulling out the box dyes. Nothing!!

Birdie Wolf

What

Shady Tyrell

She has the charisma of a sneeze. Just as soon as it comes, it goes.

Shady Tyrell

i love when u talk ur shit about beyoncé because these people really don't know mother

aiyonna

Like seriously WHY is Taylor in a bedazzled leo? Why is Olivia Rodrigo prancing around in a Leo??? Everyone and the grandma is performing in a leotard that is most likely bedazzled and folks are confused as to why she’s number 1 on the list? People take what Beyoncé does for granted because of racism. It’s the same way AAVE is internet speak or gen z slang. When black folks set the standards everyone thinks that’s just the way it has always been, and that it sprang out of nothing.

Birdie Wolf

Which of the new pop girls do you think is here to stay? I won’t speak bc I notice once I publicly endorse a pop girl, they start flopping (Chloe x Halle, Rina Sawayama, Doja Cat, Normani). I have said nothing of Tyla and she is prospering 🙏🏿

Shady Tyrell

Beyoncé suffers from the illness that is being too perfect and that makes these losers mad. Not only is she dropped dead gorgeous, but she can sing her butt off, can dance her butt off and she can do it at the same exact time. Shes broken barriers that no one else on this list has and she is too good and that makes people very uncomfortable. Let’s also add the fact that she’s a black woman on top of it so racism plays a part as well. Even in the corporate world you’ll experience this .from your white peers and sometimes even your fellow black peers as well 🤯 I’ve seen it from my other fellow, black woman friends navigating the work space and even me myself. I call it suffering from the Beyoncé effect. 🤭 Beyoncé is simply not palatable for the general public because she is a black woman with more talent in her finger than almost everyone in this industry. Yes, I said it. Someone like a Taylor Swift, who can’t sing for shit can’t dance can’t do it at the same time. Makes mediocre music at best ( and yes, I do like some of her albums too) yet she’s getting legend status and icon status crowned upon her already? White mediocrity rules this world, but there are other white artist that are far superior than her cough cough Britney, Gaga, Madonna. I really don’t care about any streaming records that she broke. This is a new era. Of course she’s gonna break streaming records. I don’t care about her having the highest grossing tour . Of course she’s gonna have it. She’s been on tour for 85 years. Its even insulting seeing her name being constantly brought up with Beyoncé. My Parasocial behavior comes out whenever I hear the conversations of both of them being compared because there is no comparison. Beyonce wins even on her worst day and Taylors best day. And Rihanna should be number two . Not Taylor . Frankly id put taylor very low but i guess that would just mean I’m petty huh 🤷🏽‍♀️ But let’s be real about Rihanna as well. She can’t sing that well all these years later, she can’t dance and can’t do it at the same time , her last tour was a mess, coming from someone who LOVES ANTI, but what she has going for her is the fact that she has AMAZING taste. She has a great ear for music and has been able to consistently pick some of the best pop records of all time for years, not to mention of course she’s a fashion icon and is just a generally a cool girl so she’s the more palatable black woman for the general public. Beyoncé is simply too perfect and that threatens people . Close to 30 years and people are still pulling the “overrated” card yet can never give a reason why. U cant say she cant sing nor can u say she cant dance. Or hearing “she destroyed others to get to the top” yet I’m still waiting for people to give examples of these so-called other artists that have direct competition with Beyoncé that she just NEEDED to get rid of because it threatened her career. Certainly not ashanti, not amerie , def not ms jenny from the block, not mya, not the neo soul girls that hate her like eryka badu? Etc….. And nobody better bring up Aaliyah. All you need to do is pull up side-by-side live performances of both of these women and please tell me if you still believe that stupid conspiracy theory. Let Aaliyah rest in peace. The fact is nobody can give a good reason for why they think she sucks because deep down they know she doesn’t. They just don’t wanna give her her flowers, which is why I say she won’t truly truly get the respect she deserves at least from the general public until she’s in that grave.

Kayla Sanders

Omg I love the pop pantheon! I'm on their pantheon as well and they have nuanced deep dives into things that you really don't see that much. And Rosalia YESS god!! She's probably the most interesting popstar to come out in the last 5 or so years and I'm so excited for R4.

Kayla Sanders

I think the go back to the woods - is more of a go back to your roots and Taylor is technically from Pennsylvania but grew up in Tennessee and it’s country Texas hold em and the cowboy Carter is Beyoncé going back to where she came from - she isn’t from the sticks - she is from upper middle class Houston Texas - so

Alivia

Duh it would be Beyoncé, who else would it be 😭🐝

Lavender1495

But she didn't work with Jack seriously until 1989 by then she already won AOTY.

Kayla Sanders

Girl it’s 402 forbidden, is the link right?

Danielle A

rihanna had people in the late 2000's/early 2010's walking around half bald looking completely crazy ... give me a pop star right now that could have several people that you actually know, shaving half of their hair to mimick their style. i can't give you a single name. regular people were convinced they could look like rihanna back then

OneTwoTrees

idk what's funnier.. kenya pronouncing amerie as uh-meer-ree or jhene aiko as jane 😂

Nina Mosley

The Taylor young thing - I think is more of a jack antinoff trait. He did the same thing with branding for Clairo. He has a really great way of helping young female artists vocalize and stand on an emotional perspective that is unpopular and sort of niche

Alivia

Can you explain Rosalia and pop because I genuinely don’t get it. I think I’ve missed it because I HATE her look but - uh…

Alivia

She has the ear for hits. She had the aesthetic game DOWN. And she straight up stop making music and people are still hungry. Her absence from the game has not been filled. But the truth is that if we isolating this to the 21st century, idk who else could possibly be number 2. Maybe Gaga… Actually being a little monster I’m putting Gaga at number 2. Riri can be 3.

Birdie Wolf

Beyoncé is the blueprint. She always will be. People saying she’s overrated will never ever sit well with me. She has put in so much damn work. She is an inspiration to so many artists that came after her.

Tiara

Let’s GO

beymatica

Now girlie pop I love you but that was a lot of words to say you didn't think someone as mediocre as Taylor would make it this far🤣 It's ok boo

Vic

Oh I'm curious why you rank Rhianna at 2 if she's never been a performer

Danielle A

Chase Beyonces peticoat - sounds like a perfect blog title for London ✍🏽 I found this article from some library last year and bookmarked it and this seems like the perfect video to share it. It’s well written and summarizes Beyoncé and her work history in terms of music https://www.toledolibrary.org/blog/history-in-the-making-20-years-of-beyonce

I’m in the middle of watching, but Beyoncé has ALL the girls wearing bedazzled leotards!

TaNiyia

as a fan of rock and indie, you're so right about people not liking when an artist's album changes but with beyonce- it's just way expected

Danielle A

Miley should have been top 10!!!! Irdgaf!!!!!!
